Rooted Change

Rooted Change Cultivating bright futures for youth of color. This is an initiative of The Moriah Group.

Rooted Change advances positive life outcomes for young people of color, with a focus on boys and young men of color (BYMOC), through capacity building, narrative change and collaboration across organizations serving young people of color.

02/19/2025

Founded by Forward Promise Fellow (Cohort 1) and friend, Ron Walker, COSEBOC is improving the futures of boys of color.

Ron Walker was a featured guest on a webinar co-hosted by Forward Promise and Rooted Change with ways to support young people of color in education after Affirmative Action was eliminated. You can find the recording on Forward Promise's YouTube!

As funding, curriculum, and discrimination policies face further restrictions, it's imperative we give to organizations that will likely take up the slack. Find out how to best support COSEBOC at coseboc.org.

“Collective care means shifting our organizations to be ones where people feel fine if they get sick, cry, have needs, start late because the bus broke down, move slower, ones where there’s food at meetings, people work from home—and these aren’t things we apologize for.”

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, writer and social activist, reminds us that the burnout from social justice work isn’t remedied only by self-care practices. In order to continue to make progress, supporting each other is crucial.

How does colonization impact health disparities in Indigenous communities?

According to research conducted by our partners at initiative, , the ongoing stress and dehumanization faced by Indigenous communities due to colonization results in physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual trauma that spans across generations.

A powerful approach to support Indigenous communities and address these inequities is by decolonizing public policy. In the research brief “Federal Policies That Contribute to Racial and Ethnic Health Inequities and Potential Solutions for Indigenous Children, Families, and Communities,” states:

“Federal policies should reflect what Indigenous Knowledge has known for millennia and what a growing body of research tells us—that an asset-based approach that recognizes culture as a protective and preventive factor improves Indigenous child and family well-being.”

The need for a strong community is a common thread across generations.

In our latest blog, we outlined strategies for fostering collaboration and collective action across generations. We also heard from Ronald Walker, recently retired Executive Director of COSEBOC, providing a baby boomer perspective, and ReZsaun Lewis, MPA, Executive Director at Lowcountry Youth Services, representing the millennial generation.

As blog contributor Ron Walker aptly puts it, we need to unite in a “conspiracy of care” to heal, reknit the fabric of our communities, and foster generational reconnections.
