Hi-Noon Toastmasters 3963

Hi-Noon Toastmasters 3963 Hi-Noon is a community club that is open to all adults. We offer:

A supportive and experienced environment. Mentors to help you. Constructive Feedback.

We will encourage you to dream Big, set goals and achieve them! Isn't that what everyone wants? We are located in Huntsville, Alabama. Our club is a safe and supportive place to polish your communication skills. Our members include authors, artist, educators, college students, engineers and even a NASA Scientist! We are a very diverse group. Whether you are working to advance your career, improve

your presentation skills or even feel confident speaking in front of others...Hi-Noon Toastmasters Club is the place for you. Still on the fence? Here are 6 reasons why you should join us:

1. You’ll become a better speaker. Yes, that's a "no-brainer" reason for joining Hi-Noon Toastmasters. When you join Toastmasters, you receive a Competent Communicator’s manual which outlines the first ten speeches you will deliver. I'm sure you've heard that “you get out of Toastmasters what you put in.” This is a great reminder that you must put in the work and prepare for your speeches in order to become a better speaker. Of course you will have plenty of help doing that.

2. You’ll become a better listener. By watching other members’ speeches and evaluating their performance, you’ll soon improve your listening skills. Evaluating your fellow club members enables you to really pay attention and listen carefully. This gets you into the habit of listening, absorbing and analyzing…which becomes a valuable learning opportunity.

3. You’ll develop stronger leadership skills. In addition to the opportunity to improve speaking skills, members of Toastmasters can take on leadership roles within their club. Opportunities include President, VP of Education, VP of Public Relations, VP of Membership and Treasurer. These opportunities give you a chance to lead your club and improve the experience of its members. These skills can be transferred to both your personal and professional life.

4. Joining Toastmasters will help improve your job interview skills. The process of practicing your speech and making sure it’s clear and concise will help you in your interviews.

5. Joining Toastmasters will help you think on your feet. Each Toastmasters club has a part of the meeting known as “Table Topics.” During this part, the Table Topics Master lays out a scenario and calls members of the club to the lectern to respond to the statement or answer a question. You might be asked something as simple and fun as “what is your favorite summer vacation memory?” or something complex such as “why do you think there is life on other planets?” In any case, you'll need to think on your toes to response and let me say...that is a great skill to have.

6. You’ll expand your network. Toastmasters is a great way to meet new, interesting and successful people. You have the opportunity to meet many new friends and acquaintances in a wide range of industries. Remember when I said earlier that we are a diverse group? This is true. These members can sometimes become friends and many have become mentors. You'll also have plenty of opportunities to help them, as well. So, are you ready? Join us on Tuesdays from 11:30 AM to 1pm. Meet our members, observe our meeting, hear a few speeches and see for yourself if we are a good fit for YOU! Hope to see you this Tuesday!

Meeting Report (for 4-12-2022):

Our guests were Trenace (returning) and Richard (first time).

TJ was praised for completing Level One in Presentation Mastery. Yay TJ!

We voted two former members - Roslyn and Matthew - back into the club!

Toastmaster TJ said “empathy” (the meeting’s theme) “doesn’t always lead you to say what people want to hear, but it does lead you to say what people need to hear”. Table topics master Allyson’s topics included “Discuss a time when you experienced or witnessed empathy – and how that made you feel”.

Our two speakers:

Shontrill (“The Years Fly By”) shared, with personal pictures, the joy of watching Derrick Jr grow up (What? He’s still only four years old Shontrill!) and surprise that it’s going by so fast.

Matthew (“Room to Grow”) revealed his personal life visions – family relationships, professional challenges, new home, and continuing graduate education in Ice Breaker style.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders TJ, David, Midori, Terry, and Allyson.

Congratulations to our winners – Richard (Best Table Topic), and Lisa (Best Evaluation).

Our guests were Trenace (returning) and Brian (first time).

Toastmaster David asked each attendee to say something quick about their relationship to the meeting’s theme (Laughter and Llamas).

Table topics master Terry asked nine of us (a new record?) to relate a funny experience. (Ask anyone who attended about “Portion Control”.)

Our featured speaker:

Charles (“Black Superman & The Power of Diversity”), showed, in content, delivery and staging, why this inspiring speech won the Division A International Speech contest and will likely blow away the competition at the District contest May 16.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders David, Allyson, Midori, Shontrill and Terry.

Congratulations to our winners – John Grogan (Best Table Topic), and Debbie (Best Evaluation).

Sorry, no group picture – again! I fumbled the meeting recording thingy (;@ #$ #&*^% #$). Promise to do better soon.

Meeting Report (for 3-29-2022):

Our guests were Sherry, Trenace, and Micheala (first timers), Zeke (returning) and Shikina (regular).

We voted and inducted Midori into the club and Toastmasters!!!

Toastmaster John’s quotes (Dickens, Emerson, The Beatles) and poem (Limon) welcomed Spring (meeting’s theme) to Hi-Noon. Table topics master Debbie gave four of our guests a taste of impromptu speaking practice.

Our two speakers:

David (“Night of the Evil Unicorn”) practiced his funny, imaginative Tall Tales speech featuring a scary creature that comes banging at his bedroom door late one night.

Sebastian (“The Low Hanging Fruit”), live from a conference room at Hudson Alpha, showed how vegan choices, if adopted worldwide, would dramatically reduce the land required to feed humanity while also cutting climate changing emissions.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders John Williams, Jacquline, Caz, Allyson, and Debbie.

Congratulations to our winners – Sherry (Best Table Topic), and Shikina (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 3-22-2022):

Our guests were Midori (first time) plus Shikina (SC).

Jacquline was praised for completing Level One in her Presentation Mastery path. Yay Jacquline!

Toastmaster John Williams shared his tips for a happy retirement, and how to get there – with special emphasis on saving/investing early, luck and having something to do. Table topics master Shikina asked about our bucket list, Tom Brady’s un-retirement, and more.

Our two speakers:

Shontrill (“I Need Something”) shared the challenges and joys of raising cute, independent Derrick Jr – including a very generous helping of hugs, both in-person and by phone.

Cheryl Mae (“Enough is Enough”) put us into the tense, no-win leadership role she held at an energy trading company, where she was squeezed between much older, argumentative, stuck-in-their-ways subordinates and the same type of boss.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders John Williams, Debbie, Allyson, Jacquline, and Shikina.

Congratulations to our winners – Midori (Best Table Topic), and David (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 3-15-2022):

Our guests were Zeke (first time) plus Queing and Laquita (both returning).

Toastmaster Cheryl Mae explained how Movies from Childhood (the meeting’s theme) are great self-care when the stresses of adult life get to you. Table Topics Master David affably (Word of the Week) asked - as a child - what was your favorite movie, snack bar treat, actor/actress, etc.

Our two speakers:

Allyson’s (“Licensed to Drive”) trip to driving confidence, helped by her school’s driving instructor and parents, was nerve racking, and included early failure, but ended well.

John Grogan (“You Have to Keep on Going”) from the road (at 75 mph), listed difficult times (Korea, Vietnam, 911, etc.) in his time. He said, in effect, “stuff happens”. We just need to focus on the present.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Cheryl Mae, Debbie, Sebastian, and David.

Congratulations to our winners – Zeke (Best Table Topic), and Terry (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 3-8-2022):

Our guests were Queing (returning) and Laquita (first time).

Sebastian was praised for completing Level 5 in his Dynamic Leadership path. Yay Sebastian!

Toastmaster Sebastian is relieved. He said, “Longer Days” (the meeting’s theme) are finally here – so we can enjoy some after-work time in the sunshine! Table Topics Master Terry asked, “How will you get the most out of those newly elongated (Word of the Week) days?”

Our two speakers:

Jacquline (“Pain Management”) talked about the revolting, tragic history of medical experimentation on black people.

Debbie (“Tik Tok Experiment with Music”) used our learning laboratory to try presenting material Tik Tok style: her cute dog, looking for the best resting spot, to lively music.

It was the best hour of the week, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Sebastian, David, Allyson, Tim, and Terry.

Congratulations to our winners – Cheryl (Best Table Topic), and Robby (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 3-1-2022):

We had three guests Roslyn, Tamara and Queing. All three are local and two, Roslyn and Tamara, have some Toastmasters experience!

Terry was praised for competing Level 3 in her Presentation Mastery path. Yay Terry!

Toastmaster Terry is excited. She said, “A New Day is Here!” (the meeting’s theme) because “the flood waters have receded, the sun is out and spring is just around the corner”. Table Topics Master Shontrill wove the theme, and the Word of the Week (enrapture), into challenging questions.

Our two speakers:

Sebastian (“Organizing a Speech Contest – Looking Back”) described his experience organizing and running the Area speech contests last month – with challenges overcome and praise for all helpers.

Lisa’s (“Making Greener Choices for a Greener Life”) enthusiastic Show and Tell about ways you too and go green was a cornucopia of products and lifestyle choices – such as a vegan cactus leather bag.

It was a bright, hopeful, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Terry, John Williams, Caz, Debbie and Shontrill.

Congratulations to our winners – Queing (Best Table Topic), and David (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 2-22-2022):

Our meeting’s theme, Black History Month, it’s purpose and history, was the subject of Toastmaster Caz’s Thought of the Day. Interestingly, the original purpose of the observance was to give people of all ethnicities space to think about and represent their culture.

The theme was later turned into relevant challenges, by Table Topics Master Allyson, with the use of the quotes of famous black Americans.

Our two speakers:

Zakia (“Unsung Heroes”) told the moving story of the first responders, including her big brother Stacey, who helped at the Twin Towers after September 11, 2001, and who subsequently became sick from the toxic fumes.

Terry (“Black and White: A Book for Human Connection”) wants us to make a decisive human connection toward unity. Speaking about the seminar given by our own Charles Holley, based on the book in her title, she encouraged us to take risks like meeting someone different or reaching out a hand, to help someone in need.

It was a proud, thoughtful, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Caz, David, Shontrill, Jacquline and Allyson.

Congratulations to our winners – David (Best Table Topic), and Lisa (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report (for 2-15-2022):

Shannon (NH) was our guest, invited by David.

David asked each of us to say which we liked better – butterscotch or gum drops (the meeting’s theme). Folks chose both kinds of confectionery (Allyson’s Word of the Week) equally.

Our two speakers:

Lisa’s (“The Direct Speaking Style”) predominant speaking style is direct. She observed that the direct style has utility in her profession but also must be used with care around peers and the general public.

John Grogan (“What Black History Month Means to Me”) was in the same city, and even in the same neighborhood, at the same time, as major events in black history – including the “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, DC and the shooting deaths of Malcolm X (NYC) and Martin Luther King (Memphis).

It was a sweet, brisk, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders David, Allyson, Zakia, Terry and Jacquline.

Congratulations to our winners – Shannon (Best Table Topic), and Sebastian (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report for 2-8-2022:

Debbie kicked it off talking about Favorite Things About Toastmaster Clubs (the meeting’s Theme). Terry’s Word of the Week (perspective) was used – a lot.

Our two speakers:

Tim’s speech (“The Little Things”), paraded a splendiferous, humorous, abundance of gestures (the little things) before us, illustrating and explaining what they meant, how to perform them and even how they fit the current moment in our culture and country.

Tracy, our surprise guest, got Allyson to give him a title for his extemporaneous speech (“Let It Go and Enjoy Life”). He took it to an energetic space with bits of music, dancing, how to parent using Tik Tok, and much more.

It was a surprising, favorite, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Debbie, Terry, Allyson, Sebastian and Shikina.

Congratulations to our winners – Barbara (Best Table Topic), and Jacquline (Best Evaluation).

Meeting Report for 2-1-2022:

John’s thought of the day was all about the meeting’s theme – Winter Sports. “My personal nemesis (word of the week)”, he said, “is winter. But there are lots of people who love winter, work outdoors in it and just naturally want to play in it – especially in colder countries.” Most popular, by participation, are Ice Hockey and Bandy (gentler than ice hockey, played on a soccer-size field, with a ball rather than a puck - very popular in Russia).

Everyone got to speak, many by answering John’s Table Topics questions about winter sports.

Our two prepared speeches were:

Terry (“Will You Take the Risk”), began by asking us to read our own Charles Holley’s book “Black & White: Healing Racial Divide”. That book touched her heart. Obviously emotional, she went on to challenge us, in this black history month, to rededicate ourselves to reaching out to others, to recognize that unpleasant things are still happening between the races, and that even simple gestures can be powerfully healing.

Shikina (“Been There, Should Have Done That”) looked back on her college career with a little sadness because of missed opportunities. Things she could have done that would have broadened her experience: conducting tours of the campus; participating in campus improvement groups; studying abroad - and - most especially, she could have joined Toastmasters. She encouraged us all to examine whether we are, right now, taking full advantage of all that Toastmasters has to offer (like the leadership and contests). Plus, share the word with friends about how Toastmasters might help them.

It was a bracing, winning, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Sebastian, John Williams, John Grogan, Tim, and Robby.

Congratulations to our winners – Jacquline (Best Table Topic), and Robby (Best Evaluation).

01/31/2022

Meeting Report for 1-25-2022:

Shontrill’s thought of the day focused on the meeting’s theme – Leaders. One thing effective leaders must have is vision (the word of the week). “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way to others.” (John C. Maxwell)

David’s Table Topics asked leading questions like “Which leader, alive or dead, would you like to spend an hour in conversation with – and why?”

Caz (“Leading from the Front”) explained his leadership philosophy with examples, slides and pictures from his last position in the U.S. Army – Colonel and commander of Public Health Command – Region West (PHCR-W). He had a large staff with special technical abilities (medical physicists, industrial hygienists, veterinarians, etc.) serving all Army personnel in the CONUS, west of the Mississippi. He summed up the key to his philosophy as effective communication. Communicate: performance objectives, your command philosophy, performance ratings to staff (in person), and engage and know your staff personally.

John Grogan (“Did I Make the Right Decisions?”) prevented injury to a child on the ski slopes, last week, but injured himself in the process. The fall dislocated his shoulder. In great pain, he made three key decisions over the following 6 hours: 1) Rather than wait for ‘rescue’ on the slope, he skied down to the lodge, 2) Rather than let the ambulance crew take him 60 miles further from his home (to the nearest hospital), he drove himself to a hospital in his hometown, and 3) Rather than leaving that hospital (right after they reset the shoulder, gave him pain killers and an MRI) he “let them” keep him for observation, took a 3 hour nap, and accepted an egg salad sandwich, before driving himself home.

It was a surprising, snappy, fun meeting, thanks to the excellent preparation and ex*****on by our meeting leaders Shontrill, John Williams, Debbie, Lisa, and David.

Congratulations to our winners – John Williams (Best Table Topic), and Terry (Best Evaluation).
