There’s more to our Foundation team than what you see at the office! Our newest Major Gifts Officer, Alden Cayse, was recently honored with the Katherine and Richard Lester Arts Contribution Award at the Community Ballet Association awards.

The award recognizes an emerging leader who has made a meaningful contribution to the arts, a fitting honor for someone who has made community involvement such a big part of her life.

Alden has a knack for staying connected and engaged. She teaches 4th-grade etiquette classes, where she brings history into her lessons and makes comparisons to international etiquette part of the conversation.

She’s currently President of the Huntsville Museum of Art guild and served two years as Treasurer of the Ballet Guild. She used that knowledge to help the Gothic Guild navigate the transition of a new payment system.

Now, Alden gets to put that community connection to work by meeting with people across Huntsville and North Alabama, helping connect their philanthropic passions with the work happening through Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

Some NICU memories never leave you. For Alyssa and Mark Cromer, it’s the sounds of the monitors and equipment surrounding their twin sons, Lewis and Paul. Born at just 31 weeks, so many of the moments Alyssa and Mark had imagined as new parents had to wait.

Paul was more than a week old before Alyssa could hold him for the first time. He weighed just 2 1/2 pounds. It would be weeks before the twins were big enough to wear clothes or take their first bottles.

When so much of caring for your babies is out of your hands, the smallest things can mean everything. Alyssa remembers taking Lewis and Paul’s tiny clothes home each night to wash them. It was something she could do for them.

Then came the milestones that made home feel a little closer.Nurse Beth helped get the boys' beds side by side in the unit, giving Alyssa the chance to hold both of her babies together. Nurse Teddy gave Lewis and Paul their first bottles.

“The nurses don’t just motivate the babies, they motivate the parents," Alyssa said. “They were fantastic and patient with us."

Today, Lewis and Paul are thriving 4-year-olds and big brothers to their little sister, Josephine.

When Mark thinks about the donors to the Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund who help provide specialized equipment and technology for the NICU at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children, his message is simple:

“They should know that their donations literally help create families."

Each year, our Regional Level III NICU cares for more than 1,200 premature and critically ill babies.

As we close out , we celebrate how far these babies have come, the incredible team that cares for them and the families who hold onto hope through every milestone along the way. 💙

Today is World NICU Awareness Day — a day to celebrate our tiniest patients, the families whose lives are forever shaped by the NICU experience, and the incredible caregivers by their side. 💕🩵

When Emma was born at just 27 weeks and 4 days, weighing only 1 pound, 9 ounces, she needed immediate, specialized care. She was intubated for her first 10 days of life, and continued to rely on respiratory support as her tiny lungs developed.

Emma would spend 212 days in the Regional Level III Neonatal ICU at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children. For first-time parents Jessi and David, that meant watching the seasons change from inside the NICU. Emma spent her first Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day there.

Through it all, her incredible NICU team made sure there were still memories to celebrate. They decorated Emma’s space, created special keepsakes and made sure she got to meet Santa 🎅🏽, all while providing the critical care she needed.

After 212 days, Emma got to go home. Today, she’s a thriving 13-month-old continuing to reach new milestones.

Each year, our NICU cares for more than 1,200 premature and critically ill babies like Emma. We are incredibly grateful for the physicians, nurses, therapists, child life specialists and entire NICU team who provide expert, compassionate care to these babies and their families every day.

For more than three years, Ana and her family have been navigating childhood cancer. Along the way came 127 weeks of chemotherapy treatment. Every Monday, like clockwork, Ana returned to the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Clinic at Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

But last Friday, she walked through those familiar doors for a very different reason. This time, there was no chemotherapy waiting for her.

Instead, Ana was greeted by family, friends and her care team, all there to mark an incredible milestone: her No Mo’ Chemo party! 🎉 Among those cheering her on was Orbit, a Canines for Coping facility dog who has been a comforting presence throughout her treatment.

Through the Crim Compassion Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation, donors helped make the day all about Ana, with her choice of cake, decorations and gifts from her own wish list.

Support from the Crim Compassion Fund extends far beyond celebrations. Childhood cancer treatment can place an added financial strain on the entire family, which is why the fund helps with needs like rent, utilities, gas and other expenses while also creating moments of comfort and joy along the way.

In FY26 alone, $107,249 from the Crim Compassion Fund supported local children and families facing cancer and blood disorders right here in North Alabama.

“After 210 days, I’m going home!” 💙 Yesterday, those words were written on a very special NICU graduation chalkboard for Ashton Johnson.

Born 14 weeks early at just 1 pound, 6 ounces, Ashton has spent nearly seven months growing, fighting and overcoming challenge after challenge.

And faithfully, every day, his mom, Sonia, was there.

She remembers the fear of those first days in the NICU and all that was unknown.

“The first thing I thought was, 'Oh my gosh, will we survive? Will he make it?'”

These are questions many NICU parents know all too well.

Day after day, Sonia watched Ashton grow. She learned his likes and dislikes. She watched his face light up as he began recognizing familiar faces and voices. And she found comfort in a care team that met her family where they were, celebrated every milestone and, over 210 days, became like family.

Ashton’s journey would eventually take him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a final intestinal surgery, where he completed the last month of his hospital stay.

So yesterday, when Ashton was finally discharged from Vanderbilt, home wasn’t their first stop.

Sonia drove straight to Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

Waiting for them were familiar faces from across the hospital, people who had come to know and love Sonia and Ashton over those 210 days and were ready to celebrate one final milestone together: his NICU graduation. 🎓

Ashton’s journey gave Sonia a firsthand look at all that goes into caring for the NICU’s tiniest patients, from the nurses and doctors by his side to the lifesaving equipment that supported him along the way.

“Ashton couldn’t have made it as far as he has without the equipment,” she shared.

During NICU Awareness Month, Ashton’s homecoming is a beautiful reminder of what generosity can make possible. Ashton is finally home. And in the words of his mom: “I believe in miracles.” 🤍

This National Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, we honor the women in our community facing these cancers and recognize the challenges that often reach far beyond their medical care.

For Taneeshia, the Lee Coggins Patient Care Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation was there when cancer touched more than her health, providing a wig that helped her feel more like herself and Christmas gifts that brought joy to her children during an incredibly difficult time.

From emergency financial assistance and gas cards to care packages and wigs, donor support of the Lee Coggins Patient Care Fund helps women feel seen, cared for and reminded that they are not alone.
