HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach Educational Outreach at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology aims to create a genomically literate society.

HudsonAlpha is inspiring and preparing society to embrace and use genomic information in their healthcare and agriculture. The Educational Outreach team is helping create a workforce for life science organizations of the future. Our education programs train educators and future scientists through hands-on classroom modules, digital learning, materials and in-depth school and summer camp experiences for educators and students.

This year’s LABS (Launching Aspiring Biotechnology Students) students have officially *launched*. These high school students will come to HudsonAlpha after school 24 days across this school year, learning new lab skills and building biotech confidence. 🧬

Last week, a new group of college students began their training semester with HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach, and they’re already getting hands-on with biotechnology.

Through Biotech Launch, students spend a semester in our training lab building workforce-ready skills, earning biotechnology certifications, and gaining hands-on lab experience. Then, they put those skills into action during an internship semester in research or biotech industry roles right here on our campus.

These first few days are just the beginning. 🧬🔬 We can’t wait to see what this cohort learns, creates, and accomplishes over the months ahead!

Every year, we fill a new jar. 🫶

Every bead represents a learner impacted by HudsonAlpha Educational Outreach through one of our programs, activities, or resources over the past year.

Tomorrow, we’ll fill this year’s jar—and there’s one thing only I know: the color. 👀

Then it will take its place on these shelves alongside the jars from years past, where it will quietly remind us every day of just how many learners we’ve had the opportunity to reach…and why we do what we do.

What happens when classroom learning meets real-world experience?

That’s the idea behind Biotech Launch, a HudsonAlpha program designed to help community college and nontraditional students build the technical skills, professional experience and confidence they need to take their next step into biotechnology.

Students get hands-on experience with biotechnology techniques and equipment, connect with professionals and gain a better understanding of what it’s like to work in the biotech industry.

And next week, we’ll welcome our newest Biotech Launch cohort to campus. 🧬

We’re excited to see where this group goes—and to keep building pathways into Alabama’s growing biotechnology workforce.

As Summer of STEM 2026 comes to a close, we're celebrating another incredible season of curiosity, discovery, and hands-on science.

This summer, 371 learners representing 66 schools participated in 15 educational programs spanning 1 to 9 weeks. From middle school campers making their first DNA discoveries to high school students learning research skills, college interns advancing real-world projects, and teachers strengthening their classrooms, every program was designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and science-literate citizens.
