Seeing red. For all the right reasons. 🔴 🔬

Hands-on learning with protein purification and a little (or a lot of) fluorescence with our Biotech Launch students. 🧬

🥜 Wiregrass Peanut Project “Extraction Week” is well underway. Over the course of this week, 180+ wiregrass high schoolers from 8 schools will participate in a half-day, high-tech lab experience. These student scientists planted seeds a month ago in their classrooms and have been care taking them ever since. Now they are at the Wiregrass Innovation Center to extract DNA from the plant seedlings for testing.

Their work is not done after today, in a few weeks they will get results of the DNA analysis and help HudsonAlpha scientists make decisions about next steps. We continue to be blown away by what these students can do, how engaged they are in the process, and the lab confidence they are building. 🧬

Science is a lot more powerful when students get to do it.

At Huntsville Junior High, SPARK students are spending four weeks exploring biotechnology through hands-on experiences, from micropipetting and running gels to bacterial plating and learning about careers in the field.

We’re three weeks in, and these students have already learned skills that most people never get to try in middle school.

One week left. 🧪🧬

Things these high schoolers never thought they’d be doing… 👀🧬

Working in a real lab. Using biotechnology. Getting hands-on with science that goes way beyond the classroom.

And this is just another day in HudsonAlpha LABS (Launching Aspiring Biotechnology Scientists). 🔬

This is what workforce training looks like. 🧬

Biotech Launch students are getting hands-on experience with the techniques and tools used in modern biotechnology.

We welcomed middle school life science teachers to the Wiregrass last week for our Middle School GPS workshop series.

Middle school students. Real lab skills. Real science. 🧬🧪

This week in SPARK, students at 🐾HJHS 🐾 put their skills to work exploring how DNA and bacteria are used as tools to make scientific discoveries, and they are just getting started. ✨

Last night, 400+ curious minds showed up to talk about one thing we all have in common: aging. We kicked off HudsonAlpha U: Future Proof, The Science of Healthy Aging with a packed house at the Jackson Center.

Kelly East, VP of Educational Outreach, and Neil Lamb, HudsonAlpha's President, explored:
🧬 What actually happens as we age?
⏳ Is aging inevitable?
🔬 What’s happening inside our cells?
🏃‍♀️ And how do our everyday choices influence the aging process?

It was an evening full of science, surprising history, a few questionable “anti-aging” props 😉, and plenty of conversation about what the research really tells us.

Couldn’t make it? Want to watch it again? Night 1 is now available online.

And we’re not done yet…

Join us for Part 2 on Tuesday, October 13 at 5:30 p.m. We’ll dive deeper into lifestyle, emerging technologies, and what the science says about living a longer, healthier life.
