Tourism ALL-a-Bama

Tourism ALL-a-Bama This program is made possible through funding from the Alabama Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Tourism ALL-a-Bama is a program designed to equip families with resources to help them enjoy travel, as well as to position Alabama as an autism/sensory disorder-friendly travel destination. 2024 applications are open! This program managed by UCP Huntsville is designed to create lasting change in Alabama tourism through connecting hospitality partners with the advocacy community and Alabama families who are not currently being served in an autism/sensory aware manner.

Huntsville Botanical Garden, in cooperation with Autism Support of Alabama, is offering two sensory hour opportunities as part of the new features of Galaxy of Lights.

Sensory Hours will be this Sunday and Dec. 3 at 4:30 p.m. Anyone can choose to attend at this time, but these time slots are specially designated for guests with sensory sensitivities to enjoy the magic in a more comfortable setting. Regular operations will resume at 6 p.m. on those nights.

“Introducing sensory friendly hours for Galaxy of Lights is another step in our commitment to accessibility and inclusion,” said Botanical Garden CEO Susan L. Wagner. “By creating a calmer, more intentional environment, we’re ensuring that all members of our community can connect with the beauty, joy, and magic of the season in a way that feels comfortable and welcoming.”

During these hours, the lights will shine brightly, but all music will be at a reduced volume to create a calmer experience (narration on the Evergreen Express cannot be adjusted). ASA will provide earplugs for those who need further noise reduction, while supplies last.

A limited number of sensory toys will be available for checkout at the Admission Desk and complimentary vouchers for hot chocolate will be provided by ASA (first come, first served).

This new amenity supports HBG’s continuing endeavors to make improvements to accessibility at the Garden.

“This is truly significant — our first-ever Sensory Night at the Garden,” said Jenny Morris, executive director of Autism Support of Alabama. “As someone who has been part of the Garden community for more than two decades and as the parent of an adult on the autism spectrum, I’m deeply grateful for this chance to open the holiday experience to individuals with sensory sensitivities. Recognizing the special needs community and anyone who faces sensory challenges means so much.

“This beloved Christmas tradition now becomes more accessible to families across North Alabama, allowing them to share in its magic.”

Tickets and details for Galaxy of Lights are available at https://hsvbg.org/galaxy.

A big thank you to Huntsville Botanical Garden for welcoming Tourism ALL-a-Bama this morning for sensory tourism training. We appreciate your team making space for this important work right before a few hundred kindergartners arrived for their day of exploration.

Your commitment to building visitor experiences that feel welcoming, calming, and engaging for all guests is noticed and deeply valued.

Inclusive tourism is not about changing everything. It is about noticing what already works, adjusting what doesn’t, and making sure every visitor feels like they belong here.

Thank you again for being part of this important initiative in North Alabama tourism. 🌿💚

It’s been a busy but exciting week for Tourism ALL-a-Bama!

Not only were we able to share our story at the AT Alabama Conference in Birmingham, we also received a special shoutout at the Visit North Alabama Annual Meeting and, perhaps most- thrilling, we conducted trainings to add two more cities to our program; Scottsboro and Guntersville!

Thank you for a great week, Alabama!
