Oakwood University has received $1.2 million in federal funding to support critical repairs and upgrades to classrooms and other student learning spaces.

The funds will help improve the environments where Oakwood students learn, study, and prepare for their futures, directly enhancing the student experience.

#43 - Regional Colleges (South), tied
#32 - Top Private Schools - Regional Colleges (South), tied
#33 - Historically Black Colleges and Universities, tied

Oakwood University sits on 1,185 acres in Huntsville, Alabama that were once a slave plantation, purchased in 1895 specifically to build a school for the very people who had once been enslaved there. 📚

Founded in 1896 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church as the Oakwood Industrial School, the institution opened with just sixteen students and three teachers, teaching trades like agriculture, carpentry, and printing alongside religious and academic instruction. The land itself, a former plantation once tied to the family of Dred Scott, was transformed over more than a century into a full university, growing from an industrial training school into a respected liberal arts institution now ranked among the nation's top producers of Black medical school applicants. In 1962, a visit from Martin Luther King Jr. helped inspire a new wave of civil rights activism among Oakwood's own students and faculty, connecting the campus's founding mission directly to the movement still unfolding around it decades later.

There's something profound about a school built specifically to educate formerly enslaved people, standing today on the very land where some of them were once held in bo***ge. Did anyone in your family attend Oakwood, or another HBCU built on land with a similarly complicated history?
