An introduction to the hoses and couplings by Captain Shannon. Then one by one the firefighters were taken to the playground to begin a timed event of tracing the hose back to the pump. As you will see in the photos it was not an easy task and there was a "spaghetti bowl" of hoses. The protocol is to keep one hand on the hose at all times feeling your way through the structure. The firefighters had their hoods on backwards to block their view and they crawled their way through the "structure". They were to feel use their free arm to feel ahead and not bump their helmets on the structure. Not bumping their heads was a hard lesson to learn as well as keeping one hand on the hose back to the pump and feeling for the smooth bump bump as they went from section to section of hose. They each completed two runs. The two with the longest times of 7 min 1 second and 6 min 39 sec each shaved a good two minutes off their first times. Two others had good times on their first go of 4 min 24 sec and 4 min 21 sec. However they took their one hand off the hose. One was lucky and one was not. The lucky one managed to find the hose in the spahetti bowl that led out to the "front door" step down out of the playground. He to shaved off 2 minutes but..... The other one managed to get totally turned around and wound up back at the nozzle never feeling the couplings that could have saved him. One was an experienced firefighter which was a valuable lesson for all that everyone can make a mistake and it could be fatal. After all had finished our Captain did the course demonstrating how feeling the area ahead with one arm and hand saves head bumps and stops. He finished the course without bumping his head once in less time than the fastest. Of course he is a professional firefighter. We had two on the med list who did not actively participate in the drill and two who were not able to make the training but this experience will be shared and replicated at a later date.
