The Patrick Spann Foundation

The Patrick Spann Foundation We are a charitable organization founded to mentor low-income, women, and minorities into the next generation of math and science leaders.

Who We Are

The Patrick Spann Foundation is a network of young leaders in the STEM professions who are committed to revitalizing our nation's distressed communities by building the integrity and accountability of their young people. Our network is diverse, but many of us mirror the demographics of groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in the STEM occupations. Together we seek to par

tner with industry to prepare students from these groups for leadership roles in the STEM fields and in improving our nation's neighborhoods. What We Know

Rebuilding communities requires great resources, and therefore, our young people need to have great opportunities for success. The fastest growing professions are in the jobs that require advanced skills in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. The highest levels of career success, however, are also built on advanced 21st Century Skills -- reasoning, creativity, adaptability. But we know that education alone will not develop a pipeline of skilled workers. A skilled workforce is built communities defined by positive family values, economic stability, safety, healthy lifestyles, and expressions of creativity. How We Help

Young people, particularly from groups that are underrepresented in the STEM fields -- young people from low-income families, women, African-Americans, and Latinos -- need help to acquire the skills and confidence to reach for these opportunities. Studies show that well designed mentoring programs can be highly effective in preparing these young people. Therefore, the Foundation is currently identifying existing mentoring programs that align with our mission. We will also continue our planning to directly provide youth mentoring services. We are focusing on programs that are located in Chicago or New York City. Programs with affiliations or partnerships with Patrick's alumni schools, The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, Cornell University, or Fordham University, are particularly encouraged. School sponsored programs are also of interest. How We Work

The Foundation will seek to partner with industries that depend on a skilled STEM workforce. We recognize that they have a stake in the achievement of our mission. Working through our network, the Foundation will seek to partner with industry to understand their needs. We will reach out to them to help us support the preparation of the next generation of STEM leaders.

Under the Tree, Episode 47: A Child is a Child is a Child
The Convention on the Rights of the Child requires governments to adopt laws, policies, and practices that protect the rights of children and enhance their healthy development. The Convention was adopted by the United Nations on November 20, 1989, signed by the ambassador to the UN on behalf of the United States in February, 1995, and has languished ever since—no US president has submitted the treaty to the Senate for its advice and consent. The US stands virtually alone in its failure to ratify the convention, objecting, among other things, to the prohibition against sentencing young people to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for crimes committed before the age of 18—the US is the only country in the world that still allows such sentencing. A tireless campaigner for children’s rights and the fair sentencing of youth, Xavier McElrath-Bey Co-Executive Director of the Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (CFSY) and co-founder of the Incarcerated Children’s Advocacy Network (ICAN), joins me in conversation Under the Tree.

Dear Patrons of The Patrick Spann Foundation,

As we close our last chapter, please accept our deepest thanks for helping us move from sorrow to the joy of creating good works.
We accomplished so very much in such a short period. The responsibility of continuing our growth, however, is too heavy for anyone to carry. Fortunately, your support helped Patrick's friends and family move forward from our grief to the joy of creating good works.

To continue our progress, the balance of our donations have been awarded as a second grant to Girls 4 Science. Girls 4 Science is a dynamic, non-profit Chicago-based organization that was established in 2009 to give girls their first experience towards entering one of the STEM fields. Girls (and their parents) are provided at no cost the opportunity to be mentored by leading STEM professionals. With this grant we hope to support their efforts to provide more online programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. We urge you to visit their website (girls4science.org) to learn more about their work and open your pockets to supporting their mission.
