Coalfield Development Corporation

Coalfield Development Corporation Rebuilding the Appalachian economy from the ground up. This work begins with building trust through tangible action.

Coalfield Development was founded in 2009 in southern West Virginia by West Virginians who believed that meaningful change must come from within. Our journey began in a small apartment in Wayne County, where our founder, Brandon Dennison, established an office to address the social and economic challenges facing Appalachia, starting with affordable housing. From these humble beginnings, Coalfield

has grown into a transformative force for empowering communities and rebuilding economies across the region. Through workforce training for individuals with barriers to employment, community-led revitalization of abandoned mine lands and real estate, social enterprise development, and nonprofit capacity building, we create pathways to well-paying jobs and strong, vibrant economies. We aim to empower people who have been cast aside to transform places that have been left behind, generating prosperity for our region. Our holistic approach has delivered powerful results... since 2009, we have created 1,000+ jobs, trained 3,800+ individuals, supported 91+ new businesses, revitalized 265,000 square feet of abandoned property, and $175M+ in new investment attracted to the region.

“The people and places that have been left behind are the keys to unlocking the new prosperity ahead – and we’re transforming a century of generational challenges every hour, every day.” - Jacob Hannah, CEO

Today, Coalfield Development and the WV Community Development Hub co-presented at the State Capital on the importance of tangible economic and workforce development through our ACT Now Coalition with support from lobbyist Tommy Bailey. And while our collective impacts speak for themselves, we are honored to be spokespersons for our communities and workers as we deepen our collaborations with our state partners!

Appalachians have grown a healthy distrust and skepticism due to a century of broken promises. Today, our people get to shape a National Promise to Work in partnership with the National Skills Coalition, and it all starts with listening to the voices on the ground and understanding the needs and opportunities our communities have! Check out an exciting snapshot of that process here with our CEO Jacob!

10 years ago when we took on our biggest project ever, we invited the community into the old Corbin Factory (now West Edge Factory) and asked a simple question: "What do you want to see in this space?" A lot of amazing ideas came forward: businesses, jobs, training, but most of all, the community shared that they wanted a space for the arts. To celebrate the amazing talents and skills in the community.

Since then, we gradually brought that vision to fruition: dozens of businesses now operate here, thousands of people have been trained in this space, hundreds of jobs created, and numerous artists, concerts and workshops have launched! But we never stopped working to build an intentional space for celebrating the arts. Today, that space is officially open to the public with 17 bands performing today in our very first black box theater! We lost a lot of federal grants to build out the space, so we rolled up our sleeves and renovated the space with a bare bones kind of aesthetic - and the end result is a warm, intimate, and unique experience that places artists right in reach of the community. And in the spirit of it being "bare bones" and it being positioned in the heart of West Edge, we're nicknaming it "The Ribcage Theater." Come check it out!
