🚨 BIG NEWS FOR HOUSING ON LONG ISLAND 🚨
Governor Hochul has signed reforms to New York’s environmental review law aimed at speeding up approvals for new housing and critical infrastructure projects across the state.
As Newsday reported today, the changes could shorten project review timelines by as much as two years — helping reduce construction costs and encouraging more housing production at a time when Long Islanders are facing soaring home prices and rising rents.
Hunter Gross, President of the Huntington Township Housing Coalition, welcomed the reforms and emphasized the need for continued action to address Long Island’s housing crisis.
“I think it will make a difference. If developers have a much lower cost to actually build housing, I think that will translate to lower prices for renters.”
Gross also noted the importance of continuing to explore additional housing solutions, including expanding access to accessory apartments.
At HTHC, we’ll continue advocating for smart growth, transit-oriented development, attainable housing, and policies that help Long Islanders stay in the communities they love.
Long Island builders' group supported the move as a way to attract investment in new apartments.
