TremendoUS Tuesday!

Phoebe, another one of our delightful barrier artists, introduces herself:

"Hi, I’m Phoebe Landrum! I’m 20 years old and I’ve lived in Huntington all my life! I’ve been painting for as long I can remember but I really only focused on becoming better and improving in high school! If there’s any place you can find me, it’s probably in a tattoo shop getting tattooed! I love to work with ink and colored pencil and my favorite subject matters have always been wizards, vampires, frankenstein, and Shadow the hedgehog! I’ve been so greatful to have this opportunity and I hope to be able to take on more projects like this!"

We absolutely LOVE her wizards and insects and mushrooms! The colors just pop on her work. Thank you, Phoebe!

And...our Friday is FabouloUS with Betty Wallace!

Her words...

"I have been creating art since I was a kid. I love birdwatching and gardening. Nature shows up in everything I make from crystal spiders wraped stones and suncatchers. Nature is at the heart of my work. I'm inspired by birds flowers mushrooms and woodland details that celebrate magic in everyday life. I hope to share my love of nature and hope others see it's charms too. My husband supports me and my artistic journey. We have three children who are artists. Our creativity continues through our six grandchildren. Family imagination and the love of nature inspires all of us."

She is a treasure. Thank you, Betty, for being a part of this project!

WondroUS Wednesday!

This gal might be on the quiet side, but her work speaks for itself. Kennedy is a real talent and we are so happy she joined us in this work!

"Hello! I am a recent graduate from Huntington University's Class of 2026, B.A. degree. I have loved creativity from the very beginning! I appreciate every family member and friend that has supported me along the way. I am delighted to have been a part of this beautiful project because it gave me time to figure out my life after college and an opportunity to see fellow artists in my community. God gifted me with an artistic ability, one that I hope spreads good vibes. Clouds are one of my favorite things to paint, so I made sure to have them be part of the focus. The main subjects are flowers I have grown to love, especially sunflowers. I added a hummingbird, a butterfly, ladybugs, and a bumblebee to remind us how crucial and lovely they are to our environment. Some fun facts about me are that dogs are my favorite animal, my favorite vacation spot is Holden Beach, North Carolina, and I also do digital art, 3D work, and photography!"

TremendoUS Tuesday!

A huge shoutout and thanks to our HU Soccer team!
We built these bridges near Waltonian last summer and it was time to get them stained and sealed. These guys showed up to work at the perfect time!

As always, they are a delight to work with. They bring great tunes, sing along (and even dance a bit). They worked hard and made a real difference!

Thanks Coach Thompson for making this happen and thanks, guys, for showing up with your energy, senses of humor, and dedication to making this corner of the world a more beautiful place!

MarveloUS Monday!

This lady...is a talented, silly, fun, energetic, and passionate member of our community. Let's let her "talk" a little about herself...

"Lorry Plasterer was born in Huntington County to a family of artists. She is a third-generation commercial artist and entrepreneur, proficient in numerous mediums. You have likely seen her work through her business, Smiley Face Media!

After graduating as "Most Artistic" of HNHS class of 2007, Lorry attended IU Bloomington, earning her bachelor's degree in apparel merchandising and fashion design, a certificate from the Kelly School of Business (focus in marketing), and minors in fine art and theater. A couple of months after graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to work in the design and entertainment industries, taking her first "adult job" as a merchandiser for a showroom in Beverly Hills. Throughout her decade out West, she wore many hats in arts, design, and entrepreneurship: designing and launching multiple cut-and-sew fashion lines, producing and working on many commercials, designing advertisements and websites, acting and modeling, dancing in music videos, producing a top 100 iTunes podcast, painting murals, and running her storefront and distribution system for Native American foods - until the pandemic brought everything to a screeching halt.

Because the city shutdowns began well before the official state shutdown, she, her husband (now business partner), their cat, and their dog made the drive out to her hometown to wait things out. Then, as the LA shutdown lasted over two years, they officially and permanently relocated (with Smiley Face Media) to Huntington. While the advent of AI and easy-to-use content creation apps has taken a toll on the landscape of graphic design, photography, videography, and the types of creative work that are staples of what Smiley Face offers - it has succeeded in pushing Lorry back towards physical painting! When not working on murals or Smiley Face Media clients, you can find her working on the Herald Press Building, which she owns with her husband and sister (and which they are getting closer to opening every day)!

You can follow her socials at Lorry Plasterer (artist page on FB), (IG) and at Smiley Face Media (business page FB) and (IG)!

FabuloUS Friday!

Today, we have Matthew! We are so grateful that he chose to participate. His artist statement follows:

"Matthew Burkholder is a contemporary mixed-media artist based in Indiana. Exploring the intersection of his view on modern art and natural decay, his work combines reclaimed textures with bold acrylic and oil layers. His pieces have been featured in regional galleries and private collections across the US and overseas.

Working primarily in medium to large-scale oil painting, Matthew investigates the quiet and loud moments of human introspection through a vibrant, expressionist lens drawing inspiration from a background in self-taught expression. His compositions balance rigid, loud and darker expressions with fluid, emotive brushwork.

Matthew continues to challenge conventional perceptions of space and memory through ongoing studio experimentation while challenging the sometimes dogmatic social news of what art should be defined as.

A recent near-death experience motivated Matthew to take part in the Huntington County Barrier project.

He states, "I wanted to push myself to be more visible. I'm proud to have taken part in the Barrier Project.""

FabuloUS Friday!

A quick update on our community gardens!

Kriegbaum is looking amazing despite the sunflowers taking a hit during the storms. The tomatoes, potatoes, basil, and squashes are ready for picking and digging. If you'd like to go help yourself, please do!

Please join the garden's page to keep updated. Our gardener is there today, Friday, and Sunday evenings, working on things. Please join her!

Elmwood is also at various stages of harvesting. The peas are done, but the tomatoes and potatoes are ready for harvesting. Herbs as well! Please check it out!

A huge thanks to our gardeners and those who harvest, whomever you are. It keeps the gardens happy and producing. Keep up the good work!
