Remembering Michael Dennis Black
Earlier this week, members of the K-9 Unit had the honor of assisting the Honor Guard during funeral services for Michael Dennis Black, 76, of New Port Richey, Florida, a respected retired police officer, beloved husband, father, mentor, and dedicated servant to his country and community.
Michael passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, in New Port Richey, surrounded by his family.
Born October 23, 1949, in Huntington, West Virginia, Michael’s life was marked by service, mentorship, unwavering dedication to his family, and a deep commitment to the communities he served.
Michael holds a special place in the history of the Huntington Police Department and its K-9 Unit. In 1995, he started the department’s K-9 Unit, beginning with a Labrador Retriever trained in tracking and narcotics indication. His vision and dedication helped establish a foundation for the K-9 program that continues to serve the department and community to this day.
The K-9 Unit was honored to be a part of his final tribute, assisting our Honor Guard as we paid our respects to a man whose work and commitment helped shape the very unit we are proud to serve in today.
His legacy lives on—not only through his family, friends, and those he mentored, but also through the K-9 Unit he helped establish nearly three decades ago.
Rest in peace, Michael. Thank you for your service, your leadership, and the lasting legacy you left behind.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael’s family and all those who knew and loved him during this difficult time.
