The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District announces the return of The Healing Field to Spring Hill Cemetery September 8 – September 14. The Healing Field serves as a patriotic vigil to the thousands of victims of the 9/11 tragedy.

Flags can be purchased for $35 at Spring Hill Cemetery and the proceeds will benefit the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower Fund. Previously posted flags held by the owner can be re-posted for $15 and retrieved on September 14.

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to honor the memory of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

This year’s Patriot Day Ceremony at Spring Hill Cemetery will include local officials, First Responders, Veterans of the U.S. Military, Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District Commissioners, and patriotic music. This Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery. Light refreshments will be provided following the ceremony.

Saturday, September 12th- Sunday September 13th will be set aside as a Days of Reflection before the Healing Field is taken down on Monday, September 14th. The Healing Field participants are asked to retrieve their flags on September 14 before 4:00 p.m.

Please join the Park District as we come together as a community during this week to pay our respects, reflect and look forward together.

We’re disappointed to share that it has come to our attention that several panels along the Story Walk at Ritter Park have recently been vandalized.

The Story Walk is a wonderful partnership between Cabell County Public Library and the Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District, created to give children and families another fun, free way to enjoy reading together while spending time outdoors. A significant investment went into bringing the Story Walk to Ritter Park, and we’ve been so happy to hear the positive feedback from families who use and enjoy it. Our library staff also changes the featured story throughout the year so there is always something new to discover. 📚❤️

Unfortunately, when panels are intentionally damaged, those repairs and replacements come at a cost. Those are dollars that could otherwise help us maintain, improve, and hopefully one day expand projects like this into other parks and communities.

We’re simply asking for everyone’s help in taking care of something that belongs to all of us. Please be kind to our shared public spaces and encourage others to do the same. If you witness someone intentionally damaging or defacing public property, please report it to the appropriate authorities (police, parks, or library) rather than confronting them yourself.

We want to continue creating fun, free opportunities for families throughout our community, and we would love to see even more Story Walks in our parks someday. Help us take care of this one so we can keep dreaming about the next. ❤️📚🌳
