This weekโs WomenโOwned Business Spotlight shines on Michele Muth, CoโOwner of the Jockey Club! ๐ Weโve truly enjoyed getting to know these inspiring women and canโt wait to share Micheleโs valuable insight and experience as a business owner.
1. Tell us the story behind your business. What inspired you? What is the goal of your business? Who do you serve in the community?
The Jockey Club is really an extension of the work I have always cared about most: building community and creating spaces where people feel connected. As Director of Campus Recreation at Marshall University, I have spent years creating experiences centered on belonging, wellbeing, and engagement. Becoming co-owner of The Jockey Club with my husband allowed me to bring those same concepts into downtown Huntington in a different way through hospitality and creativity.
2. What does being a woman business owner mean to you?
Being a woman business owner means a lot to me. It means having the chance to build something of your own, take risks, and lead in a way that feels authentic to who you are. For me, it is also about setting an example for young women and showing them that they can lead, create, and make an impact in their own way. I care a lot about mentoring and encouraging other women, and I hope the work I do reflects that.
3. What has been your proudest moment in your business so far?
One of my proudest moments has been seeing the continued success of our cocktail classes. It is incredibly rewarding to watch people learn a skill, create something they are proud of, and then come back later and tell us they are still using what they learned. I also feel proud in those unexpected moments at The Jockey Club when the whole room is singing along to the same song and you can tell we have created a place where people feel comfortable, connected, and fully themselves.
4. What is one lesson that entrepreneurship has taught you?
One lesson entrepreneurship has taught me is to really know your customer so you can meet a need in a way that feels genuine. Success also depends on treating your employees well and creating a culture where people feel respected, supported and proud to be a part of what you are building. I want the Jockey Club to be a place where my employees really have a chance to shine.
5. What product or service are you most known for? Is there a customer favorite readers should know about?
We are probably best known for our cocktail classes, which tend to sell out almost immediately. They have really become a signature experience for us. More broadly, I think The Jockey Club is known for creativity. We love pushing ourselves to try new flavors, new concepts, and new ways to make cocktails feel fun and memorable. Bringing that kind of fresh energy to the Huntington market is something readers should definitely know about.
6. Why is supporting local businesses important to you?
I know how much heart, risk, and hard work go into building something, so I believe in supporting the people who are willing to do that for our community. Local businesses give a community its personality. Growing up with a dad who owned a small business, I always admired the idea of building something that leaves your stamp on a place and becomes part of peopleโs lives. Small businesses help create connections, bring energy to a community, and make life more interesting.
7. What is your go-to drink while you work? Any other fun facts you'd like to share?
When I'm working in general there is nothing better than a cold LaCroix out of a can, but since I am in the business of making drinks, I have a few favorites, and my tastes change according to the season. I love a negroni for sipping, an espresso martini (of course) or a fresh daiquiri!
8. If you werenโt running a business, what would you be doing instead?
If I were not helping run a business, I would probably be teaching more fitness classes like cycling and pilates. I already work in campus recreation and really enjoy that side of my life, especially the energy and connection that comes from leading people in that kind of setting. It is a different kind of community building, but one I really love.
9. Do you have any new developments or exciting updates about your business you'd like to share?
We are currently working on our summer drink menu, which is always a fun creative process for us. We are also looking ahead to our next cocktail class in May and talking through ways to offer more classes since they have been so popular. We have more trivia nights in the works as well, and like so many others in Huntington, we are really excited about the reopening of the Keith-Albee and the energy that will bring downtown.
