Walt Whitman Birthplace Association In 1819, Walt Whitman was born at a farmhouse in West Hills built by his father circa 1810. Birthplace of Walt Whitman on May 31, 1819.

The Birthplace was restored in 2001 and it is a fine example of native Long Island craftsmanship. The site is operated by the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association. WWBA is Walt Whitman’s voice today, celebrating the poet’s vision of democracy, diversity, and creativity. Our programs and exhibits educate the public on Whitman’s life and times, explore his contribution to our nation’s rich cultural h

eritage, and inspire young poets and writers. FEATURES
Things to do at the Walt Whitman Birthplace:

Newly restored farmhouse, birthplace of America’s greatest poet, built c.1819 by Whitman’s father. New York State Historic Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nineteenth century furnishings, unusual architecture. Interpretive Center exhibits: 130 Whitman portraits, original letters, manuscripts, artifacts, Whitman’s voice on tape, and schoolmaster’s desk. Guided tours, audio-visual show, library, museum shop/bookstore, and picnic area. Maps available for auto/hiking tour of beautiful historic West Hills. Air-conditioned Visitors Center and restrooms. All facilities handicapped accessible. Poetry readings, lectures, concerts, special events year round. Audio-visual programs

An unforgettable visit all the way from Tamil Nadu! 🌍✨
We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Dharani to the Walt Whitman Birthplace Museum. Traveling nearly 8,500 miles from Tamil Nadu, India, Dharani brought an incredible passion for poetry and education right to our doors.
As a dedicated teacher who shares the life and works of Walt Whitman with her students in India, her visit felt like a beautiful reminder of how far-reaching and universal Whitman’s message truly is. Literature truly knows no borders!

What an unforgettable afternoon! ✨

We are still reflecting on the incredible turnout at the Walt Whitman Birthplace for a very special performance featuring the legendary poet and memoirist, Mark Doty.

From the moment he took the microphone, the room was completely transfixed. Hearing Doty weave his profound insights on Whitman’s legacy with his own stunning delivery felt nothing short of historic. The energy in the room was electric, and looking around at a packed house completely enthralled by the power of poetry reminded us why words still matter so deeply.

We also celebrated Mark’s birthday to mark the occasion. 🎂🥳🎉

Thank you to Mark Doty for sharing your brilliance with us, and to everyone who came out to make this event such a massive success! 🌿📖
