Walt Whitman Birthplace Association In 1819, Walt Whitman was born at a farmhouse in West Hills built by his father circa 1810. Birthplace of Walt Whitman on May 31, 1819.

The Birthplace was restored in 2001 and it is a fine example of native Long Island craftsmanship. The site is operated by the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association. WWBA is Walt Whitman’s voice today, celebrating the poet’s vision of democracy, diversity, and creativity. Our programs and exhibits educate the public on Whitman’s life and times, explore his contribution to our nation’s rich cultural h

eritage, and inspire young poets and writers. FEATURES
Things to do at the Walt Whitman Birthplace:

Newly restored farmhouse, birthplace of America’s greatest poet, built c.1819 by Whitman’s father. New York State Historic Site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Nineteenth century furnishings, unusual architecture. Interpretive Center exhibits: 130 Whitman portraits, original letters, manuscripts, artifacts, Whitman’s voice on tape, and schoolmaster’s desk. Guided tours, audio-visual show, library, museum shop/bookstore, and picnic area. Maps available for auto/hiking tour of beautiful historic West Hills. Air-conditioned Visitors Center and restrooms. All facilities handicapped accessible. Poetry readings, lectures, concerts, special events year round. Audio-visual programs

WWBA celebrates Caribbean American Heritage Month with a salute to Sir. Derek Walcott. Sir Walcott was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. He received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. In addition to winning the Nobel Prize, Walcott received many literary awards over the course of his career, including the Guinness Award for Poetry, Britain’s W.H. Smith Literary Prize, an Obie Award and more.
