From the Desk of Velma Davis:

For most of the day on Saturday, our Club was invited to partner with an Open Streets event.

Open Streets is a collaborative effort presented by the cities of Bell, Maywood, Bell Gardens and Cudahy. During this event, they close major streets to vehicular traffic and magically, the streets turn into safe, care-free public park. The bike route started at Randolph St. and Atlantic and ended at Garfield Ave. and Ira Ave at John Ford Anson Park. These events are designed to encouage active transportation, promote public health and connect and form relationships with surrounding neighborhoods.

We had a beautiful day and I want to thank our President Val, K-Kid Advisor Myra Gonzales and Roybal-Allard Assistant Principal Norma Zendejas, HP Kiwanis member Dr. Kenya Davis-Hayes, and the Key Club for giving their gifts, talents, time and heart for volunteerism.
And last but not least, I would like to thank Open Streets promoter, Chris Vasquez, for inviting us to participate in such an amazing event.

A great time was had by all!!

The Benefits of Joining A Kiwanis Club:

Saturday was a consistent reminder of why I joined a service Club like Kiwanis, because I experienced a profound sense of meaning and connectiveness to community. I met new people. I strengthened new friendships and I was able to convince total strangers to join the Lynwood and SELA Kiwanis Clubs. And most importantly, we were able to provide examples of building authentic relationships and fostering purpose to our Key Club.

What A Day!

At today’s meeting it was time for our annual opportunity drawing that helps raise monies for our sponsored youth programs. This yearly fundraiser, led by Randy Sopp who oversees the distribution of tickets and helps collect all the monies did another spectacular job! Also, a big thank you to Jose Zepeda for donating the printing of the tickets. Our top seller was Velma Davis who sold 16 of the 150 tickets.

The opportunity drawing consisted of 10 winners at $150 each, 2 at $500, and our grand prize winner taking home $2,500!! With $7,500 being paid out to winners, we raised $7,500 towards our Youth Programs, which includes scholarships, leadership training, and conventions for the Key Club students!

Thank you to everyone who supported this event! Your continued support of both our club and the students is greatly appreciated!

Velma also had a few announcements regarding some upcoming events, which include: an Open Streets event in the community this upcoming Saturday June 20th, all cyclists are invited, the 23rd would be the Key Club Senior scholarship luncheon for recent recipients, and Friday the 26th will be the installation for incoming Key Club President Stephanie!!

A busy week for Key Club indeed!

Meeting highlight’s from last week’s Father’s Day tribute:

From The Desk Of Velma Davis:

I learned something new today… 😳

Did you know Moulay Ismail Ibn Sharif holds the record in recorded history for having the most children? Sharif was a Governor of Morocco in the 16 hundreds; and it was reported that he fathered over 1000 children with 500 wives. This tidbit was one of the facts we learned today from our early Father's Day program.

We had it early because next week is our Youth Opportunity Drawing. All are invited! But back to our Father's Day program, we recognized all of the Fathers, Grandfathers and Mentors.

According to statistical data, Father's, Grandfathers and Mentors can boost a child's academic success, foster self-esteem and increase their emotional resilience. Did you also know that Father's Day became an official holiday under President Richard Nixon in 1972. All of the Fathers, Grandfathers, and Mentors of our Club are worthy to be praised and all of our Dad figures were given a small token of our appreciation. So Happy Upcoming Father's Day to all.

We also had a special guest who was invited by our dear President Val. Jeff Herdman, President of the HPHS Alumni Association graced us with his presence. A very nice gentleman who grew up in Huntington Park. In fact, he went to grade school with our Treasurer, Tom Hargrave. He also happens to live in Tom's neighborhood. Further, he always purchased his cars from Sopp Chevrolet. Noteably, Mr. Herdman's family owned a restaurant in HP called Clifford's Cafe on Pacific Blvd. Most importantly, however, Mr. Herdman was an essential vehicle by which 4 of our graduates were bestowed a HP Alumni Scholarship Award. We enjoyed listening to Mr. Herdman reminisce about our fair city. We encouraged him to come again.

We also welcomed our K-Kid Advisor, Myra Gonzalez. who was honored today as the K-Kids Advisor. Ms Gonzalez was our first Advisor and next year will be her 4th year. She is an outstanding Advisor and has great plans for next year. We also welcomed the new Assistant Principal, Ms. Norma Zendejas from Roybal-Allard ES. Ms. Zendejas will assume Ms. Martha Gonzales's position upon her retirement. Ms. Zendejas graciously accepted a parting gift to give to Ms Gonzales on behalf of our Club.

Hail Kiwanis.

From The Desk of Velma Davis:

Last night the World Cup kicked off its first US game at SoFi Stadium. It was the USA 🇺🇸 vs. Paraguay 🇵🇾 with the South Gate, HP and the SELA Kiwanis Clubs celebrating a USA victory!

It was an Inter-Club at Brown's Soul Brewery in South Gate. It was "all the way Live" - loud, spirited, festive and just good old fashion FUN!

This was a good way to welcome new member Christian Garcia into the fold. By the way, the score ended at 4 to 1. KEEP IT UP USA!

From Former President and current Youth Advisor Velma Davis:

Service - The Heartbeat of the Key Club…

Tuesday night, Mr. Martin Delgado gave me the honor of speaking at the Senior Awards & Scholarship Assembly. This gesture afforded me an opportunity to herald the uniqueness of the Key Club. I explained to the audience that while high academic achievement is a premium, at the end of the day, when degrees are bestowed and occupations are secured, service to your community should be rendered.

Then I introduced Martin, Mr. Ta, and Joe as the backbone or vehicle of the Key Club. While these devoted men work tirelessly to help secure the future of our great Nation, we wouldn't do it without the life's breath or gas of our mighty Kiwanis Club of Huntington Park.

I informed the listeners of their tireless effort to amass the funds needed to bless our students for a job well done. It was at this point that I introduced Val Amezquita, our President who leads the charge. I continued with the worthy service projects our Key Clubbers performed, such as handing out 1000 turkeys, pies and canned goods to feed the food insecure residents of our fair city. The audience "whoa'd.”

At this point, I acknowledged our Key Clubbers who had completed over 300 hours of service (another "Whoa" could be heard throughout the audience). Sergeant-At-Arms, Julian Robles, performed the highest number of service hours, while Connie Trujillo distinguished herself by completing an incredible amount of service hours while maintaining a 4.5 GPA. Daniel Ochoa, our 2nd Sergeant-At-Arms completed the second amount of service hours, but also made the valiant move of stepping in to fill Julian's shoes when he broke his leg and was unable to serve. And last, but by no means least, we honored Jose Lorenzana who came late to our Key Club party but ended up committing over 100 hours of service. And ALL were handsomely rewarded for their efforts and their fellow Key Clubbers,
who will pick up the mantle and follow their own path, were there in full force to cheer for their Key Club brothers and sister.

What a night!

I thought I had developed wings and could fly with pride and thanksgiving because I was given the privilege to witness my young family about to soar.

- Velma

We are proud of our Key Club honorees!!

President Val and sponsored youth advisor Martin excitedly announced that tonight at H.P. High School auditorium will be the senior awards and scholarship event. Martin proudly mentioned that the Key Club honorees will be receiving their scholarships from our Kiwanis Club this evening.

Joe announced that Tuesday June 10th is the last day of school for the elementary students and our sponsored youth "K Kids" club.

Gerry announced that YMCA will be taking about 25 youth up to the Summer camp. He also announced that the Y was seeking sponsors for their annual backpack giveaway event in a couple months. He mentioned they plan on distributing 1000 backpacks to area students.

Future president Vicky announced that Newstart Organization held a voter's event at their site. He husband Jesus was interviewed on Univision. She was very pleased with the overall turnout and reminded everyone to get out and vote.

Our program and speaker today was our very own Vicky Herrera who spoke on the American Cancer Society and their efforts to fundraise in search of a cure. Vicky is an ambassador who discussed their lights of hope program, in which bags are purchased, decorated, often a short message is written on the outside, and then these bags have a candle placed inside and lit. Each bag hopes to get about $10 each in contributions. Of course, any amount donated for research is appreciated.

This event takes place in Washington D.C. and each lit bag displayed is honoring a family member, friend, or others in memory of someone who lost their life or is currently battling cancer. Some will even donate in gratitude of caregivers who have helped during this difficult time.

Vicky mentioned they anticipate 85,000 bags to be displayed at this year's event which will take place in September.

Thank you, Vicky, for your countless efforts in raising awareness and monies for cancer research.

On Saturday, May 9th, our amazing K-Kids volunteered to participate in a community food distribution project in the City of Commerce.

Under the supervision of President-Elect, Joe Aguilar and K-Kids Advisor, Myra Gonzalez, our K-Kids got a chance to experience "service at its best". They packed, organized and distributed food to families just like the Key Clubbers. What an opportunity!

The K-Kids were so proud of their accomplishments. They ethusiastically asked "Let's Do It Again"! This benevolent event was sponsored by CONASUPA, a non-profit organization providing food distribution, community programs and volunteer opportunities to support families and fight food insecurities. They are committed to two charges: “Building Hope” and “No One Should Go Hungry.”

Great job Advisor Joe Aguilar and the amazing K-Kids!!

Joe Aguilar announced an event called "Southeast L.A. Open Streets." This event will encourage residents and neighbors to bike ride in the community. The date of the event is Saturday, June 20th from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. See flyer below for more information.

Our guest speaker today was Giovanni Di Franco who has a Masters in Conservation and Restoration Science, from UCI. He spoke to our club on butterflies, bees, and other species and the importance of conservancy with respects to our environment.

Giovanni explained how bees are valuable to our environment for several reasons, including the pollination of plants which is essential for our agricultural industry. He discussed the risk factors effecting the population of bees and butterflies, these factors include pesticides, poisons, and even climate change which effects migration patterns.

Giovanni discussed the migration of monarch butterflies and how it's impacted with environmental changes, as well as plant species, especially milkweed populations that grow along this path. Other plants that effect this migration path is sage and rosemary.

Finally, he explained the importance of maintaining the population of pollinators because it leads to helping with other species, like birds, and even some insects that will grow and become food.

Giovanni also was pleased to announce that he works with a kits program that can be available to help re-introduce native plants into home or school gardens or any urban space. Information is on flyer below.

We would like to thank Giovanni for the very informative and entertaining program about monarch butterflies and its impact on the environmental community.

Our newly elected Key Club President, Stephanie Clara, conducted her first Key Club meeting on Thursday. She appeared to be very poised and confident because she conducted her meeting to a packed house. She was very organized and professional.

She also received 3 unexpected guest - Kiwanis President, Val Amezquita, President-Elect, Joe Aguilar, and Former HPHS Key Club member and graduate, Chris Vasquez. He is now the owner of SELA Bicycle Center in Bell. He came to the Key Club meeting to promote the up-and-coming Cyclavia event that is scheduled for June 20th. He attended the meeting to garner support from the Key Club to assist with his event. Mr. Vasquez also expressed an interest in becoming actively involved in our Kiwanis and Student Leadership Programs.

Many thanks Mr. Vasquez. Kiwanis needs him and he will discover that he needs Kiwanis.

Key Club is off to a great start headed into this next year!!
