You may have seen our Wetlands on Wheels (WOW) van with touch tank opportunities, but did you know that we host touch tank hours (Saturdays and Sundays) and public animal feedings(Saturdays only) at our Interpretive Center? We have a small variety of marine and terrestrial fauna if you are interested in a hands on activity and learning experience about some critters within California’s natural ecosystem taught by some of our awesome staff.

If you are looking for a fun, family friendly weekend activity for all ages, come on by the Interpretive Center! Our regular hours of operation are 9 am - 4 pm Tuesday through Sunday, and 9 am - 1 pm on Monday.

If you are new to birding or looking to grow your skills in birding, this Sunday is a great opportunity to attend our monthly Beginner Birding Workshop! Our workshop is welcome to those who are brand new to birding and allows you to build skills to spot and identify birds in the wild. We are back with our monthly critter appreciation posts! As we celebrate World Migratory Bird Day this month, we want to highlight and bid farewell to our California Least Tern (Sternula antillarum browni) population here on the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Like many other migratory birds, California Least Terns have begun their journey to the Southern Hemisphere, traveling anywhere between 1,500 to 3,000 miles one way! That’s a long way for North America’s smallest Tern!

While their nesting sites remain vaccant from now until April, BCC staff and volunteers begin our Nest Site Work Day program here within the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. This program allows BCC staff and the Department of Fish & Wildlife to restore the California Least Tern’s sensitive nesting areas while the species is away. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy is hosting a Halloween coloring contest for the annual Boo at Bolsa event this year! Coloring sheets can be picked up and turned in to our Interpretive Center. On October 25th, we will be hosting a Butterfly Pinning Workshop here at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. Participants will learn how to pin specimens with an ethically sourced Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio sp.) butterfly, which you can take home after in a display frame!
