We all know that monarch butterflies are struggling (or maybe you don’t)... many insect populations are struggling in North America, in fact all around the world biodiversity is a real issue.

So what can you do?
World Planting Day is the perfect time to talk about what you can actually DO to help out specifically our native Monarchs and our native pollinator bees!

The very BEST thing you can do is STOP SPRAYING PESTICIDE in your gardens and in general around your home – but the next best things you can do is to plant native blooming plants that bloom throughout the year here in California! Even if you don’t have a lot of space, finding a few blooming plants is a fantastic way to support pollinator species here – maybe on your porch or balcony.

At a basic level, you can stop spraying pesticides in your garden and on your plants, and you can also leave any leaves that fall onto your lawn (or push them into a pile) during the fall season, and if you have space or the capcity, planting native and a variety of plants in your space also really supports local wildlife and pollinators especially. Once spring hits, compost the leaves, or take them to a facility that does!

We want to take this Indigenous people’s day to recognize and remember the original caretakers of our beautiful Bolsa Chica wetlands. We know there has been so much wrong done to them, but it is the LEAST we can do to recognize their original stewardship.

“The Amigos de Bolsa Chica acknowledges that we are a part of a long history of those who have supported the Bolsa Chica. Before the arrival of European settlers, the Tongva and the Acjachemen peoples inhabited this land and have never ceded nor forgotten their responsibilities as its caretakers. We recognize that we benefit from learning on their traditional homeland. We honor and pay respect to the Tongva and Acjachemen communities and their ancestors by affirming their sovereign rights. As guests on this land, we acknowledge their enduring stewardship.
Although our chapter in Bolsa Chica’s history is relatively short, we are proud to continue preserving and protecting this natural and cultural landscape for future generations.”
