Trash On Your Back 5-Day Challenge

Trash On Your Back 5-Day Challenge On a mission to create our zero waste nation & globe. A fun, high visibility 5-day campaign driving awareness & education on our own personal trash impact.

Carry the Trash on Your Back wherever you go and feel just how much trash you really produce. Although there are many challengers, from the beginning… MIT’s Climate Interactive Executive Director, Drew Jones; United States, Obama Administration Senior Advisor at EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention providing advice and analysis on program and policy initiatives to prevent po

llution and advance sustainability, Matt Bogoshian; Scott Jenkins, formerly VP of Operations for the Seattle Mariners, recently appointed to the newly-created position of General Manager of the new Atlanta stadium Scott Jenkins; CEO of the Green Schools National Network Jim McGrath;University of New Hampshire’s Climatetologist, Cameron Wake; Former Navy Admiral Len Hering, RADM, USN Ret., and Former Mayor and present City Council Member, Joe Carchio, City of Huntington Beach; Aloha Grill Restaurateur & GM, Bobbie Kneeland; Ideas for Us, Executive Director, Chris Castro; and Waste Management’s VP Tom Carpenter; have been part of the Trash On Your Back 5 Day Challenge and will be participating in 2014. They see the big picture impact of trash on the planet, the future opportunities of becoming a zero waste nation and globe, and now you and people across the globe can join in too! We learned collectively that the US averages 4.4 lbs of trash per day per person, and that the USA spends $12B per year on waste management (tipping fees etc.). The TRASH ON YOUR BACK TEAM from around the world averaged .8% of trash per day vs. 4.4 lbs the average = through behavioral choice and not wanting to literally carry all the trash, we cut the average by 82%! Imagine if we cut conservatively 50% vs. the 82%, through our choices made, and we look at the $12B we spend each year, we collectively uncovered an approximate 50-82% economic reduction opportunity to save the Nation $6B per year in “waste management”! UNH also helped us to understand that our complete impact is actually 250 lbs per day based on the average American use of water, energy, carbon, and waste. We can’t manage what we can’t measure – we made the invisible visible – through hands on grass roots experience and walking our talk together because our next generation is depending on us. Join us in 2014 during Earth Day Week for the TRASH ON YOUR BACK 5 DAY CHALLENGE HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD.
