Blue Latitudes Foundation The Blue Latitudes Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.

We elevate the traditional concept of ocean stewardship by uniting government, industry and the community. The ecosystems found on oil and gas platforms are unique microcosms of life. Found offshore, in a blue ocean setting, these structures offer shelter to passing seal lions and dolphins, a nursery ground for endangered species of rockfish and a permanent residence to electric pink anemones and

scallops the size of tennis balls. Each beam and column provides a habitat for life, and completely removing just one of these structures would result in the death of an ecosystem, home to hundreds of species and thousands of individuals.

We’ve been lucky enough to work with some seriously talented creatives over the years: artists, photographers, videographers, and most recently, designers like Morgan Raith 🩵

Morgan understand that a good visual can take a big, complicated idea and make people stop, look, and actually get excited about it.

She’s designed logos, websites, apparel, exhibits, event spaces (and approximately a million other things) for us—and somehow manages to make everything feel distinctly Blue Latitudes. 🌊

And, perhaps most importantly, she’s a diver, and a true ocean babe at heart. So obviously we love her. 💎

Consider this a public service announcement / shameless glaze for a creative who knows exactly how to bring our weird little ocean projects to life. We’re very lucky to have her in our corner. 🩵

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) recently released the draft California Artificial Reef Program or the (CARP).

↪️Here’s where you come in! Public Review and feedback will help shape how regulatory agencies and developers build reefs in California state waters for years to come!

1st Highlight of the CARP

This plan puts biological productivity first!
It mandates that all future artificial reefs must actively build native marine life and kelp forest ecosystems — not just attracting fish from other areas

2nd Highlight of the CARP

Safety and ecosystem health is prioritized. This plan sets strict standards for best practice, meaning only durable, non-toxic materials in conjunction with spatial siting and routine monitoring.

When it Comes to Rigs to Reefs

While California’s offshore oil and gas platforms aren’t included in the CARP, the plan recognizes their biological value and that reefing could be addressed through a future addendum to the CARP.

One dive flag, a platform most folks will only ever see from the highway, and a crew that took years to build.

From Scripps Instn. of Oceanography to The Explorers Club, dive boats and conference hallways — this group came together slowly, around one shared question: what happens to structures like this when the oil stops flowing.

We don’t see a rig. We see a reef — decades of steel that’s quietly become one of the densest artificial habitats on this coast, whether it was built for that or not. Figuring out what comes next takes exactly this: biologists, photographers, and policy nerds all in wetsuits, working together to protect our oceans.
