Yesterday two new trash interceptor were announced to be coming to SoCal via the at the . One in the LA River and the other in the San Gabriel River that splits us in Orange County/Seal Beach and LA/Long Beach.

For over 2 years we have been part of discussions with elected and department officials. We have brought in the data from the cleanups our amazing volunteers have conducted. Reinforced the need to make sure the green sea turtles that swim in the river will not be harmed. And are always here to protect the ocean, waves, and beaches for all.

With any luck, Seal Beach will be better protected by the first flush of 2028.

The count is in. 4,138 nurdles were found on Seal Beach this past Saturday in a two hour window with 21 volunteers in a very small area.

This was part of the second annual International Plastic Pellet Count in collaboration with .pirg

We will check in on the data reports from around the globe to see how Seal Beach ranked.

Thank you to those that came out.

Are those nerds? Close. Nurdles. Plastic pellets. Petroleum based companies create them to be sent off to manufacturers of plastic products. Add some heat, melt, and mold.

The downside is that transportation mishaps take place damaging containers scattering nurdles. Some of those happen while on ships. These little pellets float. Fish, turtles, birds, etc. think they found a fish egg to eat.

Some wash ashore treated as generic microplastics.

On Saturday we are taking part in a plastic pellet survey in Seal Beach. Sign on up if you want to be part of the hunt. Link in the bio.

It felt good to be back in the Santa Ana River this morning. We have not been in it for almost six months. Normally winter storms leave our section a bare sand bar but as you can see the jungle is here along with all the birds.

In November, as with every year end cleanup, we left our adopted section clean of debris. The rains came through sending trash down our way. The vegetation acted as a net catching a lot of it.

The goal of this program is to remove the junk so it doesn't get to open water and make people aware of what happens to trash they see entering storm drains, creeks, and channels upstream.

Next time we are down in it will be May 16th. Register for it.
