Drains to Ocean

Drains to Ocean Drains to Ocean is a grass roots, for-profit organization with a mission to keep pollution from flowing into the ocean. Stay tuned 26/27 www.drainstoocean.org

Drains to Ocean is a 501-c3 non-profit organization created for you and powered by the people. The goal is to educate the public about litter issues that are created the second we step out of our own front doors. We want to bring awareness to the extensive pollution issues effecting our local streets, wetlands, beaches, and waterways.

Jane Goodall was the voice for the voiceless. She showed the world animals feel, think, and deserve respect — and gave us all a reason to fight harder for them.

For me and Drains to Ocean, she was pure inspiration. The way she lived, speaking up for those who couldn’t, is exactly what we tried to do for the ocean. She will always be remembered, and her spirit mirrored in the fight to protect this planet. RIP❤️

We are deeply saddened by the news of Kolby Aipa’s passing. He was a shining star in our Grom Division during a couple of our RRR Surf Off contests, and later brought that same stoke and ripping style to the Juniors. What a nice kid—always respectful, always amped, and raised right by a family who showed up to all the beach cleanups and surf events.

Our biggest goal at Drains to Ocean was always to reach the kids with our mission—and Kolby and his sister embodied everything we hoped to inspire. Our hearts are with the Aipa’s and the greater HB surf family during this heartbreaking time. Kolby will forever be part of our history and memories. 🖤🌊
Rest in Peace

Transition to For-Profit Status: We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of our supporters who have been with us over the years. Your dedication and efforts have made a tremendous impact. As we move forward, we have made the decision to transition Drains to Ocean from a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to a for-profit entity. This shift will allow us to operate with greater flexibility and efficiency. While this means we will no longer hold non-profit status, our commitment to our mission remains strong. Thank you for your continued support as we enter this new chapter.

Stay tuned… 26/27

Just about fifteen years ago, “Drains to Ocean” began as a simple idea in the mind of Seth Matson, a local Huntington Beach surfer who was actively involved in leading beach cleanups for the local Surfrider Chapter. Now, after more than 14 years of dedicated river, street, and beach cleanups, environmental surf events, art shows, and countless community efforts, we have made the difficult decision to dissolve the non-profit.

“When I started Drains to Ocean, my goal was to educate the public—especially the youth—about the importance of protecting our oceans. I believe we achieved that as a small grassroots non-profit. The connections I made with the community, volunteers, and board members, many of whom have become great friends, are something I will always treasure,” reflects Founder and President, Seth Matson.

This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated board members, who selflessly gave their free time month after month, our sponsors and donors, and the public who stood by us. There are countless individuals, businesses who contributed to our mission, and while it’s impossible to name everyone, please know we are deeply grateful to all who helped in any way.

For those still passionate about beach cleanups, many NGOs continue the vital work of keeping our beaches clean and safeguarding our oceans, waves, and marine life (below). We salute their tireless efforts.

P.S. don’t be surprised if you see us cleaning the beaches in the future, free from the constraints of a non-profit. Stay tuned!

Flashback to 2019 when we did a beach cleanup in Costa Rica on our vacation. Wait, you can do beach cleanups on vacation? Yep, just takes a little effort and coordinating. Doing a beach cleanup on vacation is a great way to give back to the community and the environment while enjoying a beautiful destination like Costa Rica.
Have you ever done a beach cleanup on vacation? If so where?

You can still have a Happy 4th and know these facts. Here in Huntington Beach, the City allows thousands of pounds of toxic litter to be blown up in the sky right over our ocean each year. If Drains to Ocean littered one bag of fireworks off the pier during the day, we’d be fined and possibly jailed.

REPOST:::

This 4th of July, let's ditch the fireworks. Not only do they contribute to climate change and release harmful pollutants, but they also cause anxiety in animals and endanger them.
Petition your city to have a drone or laser show instead
