Just about fifteen years ago, “Drains to Ocean” began as a simple idea in the mind of Seth Matson, a local Huntington Beach surfer who was actively involved in leading beach cleanups for the local Surfrider Chapter. Now, after more than 14 years of dedicated river, street, and beach cleanups, environmental surf events, art shows, and countless community efforts, we have made the difficult decision to dissolve the non-profit.
“When I started Drains to Ocean, my goal was to educate the public—especially the youth—about the importance of protecting our oceans. I believe we achieved that as a small grassroots non-profit. The connections I made with the community, volunteers, and board members, many of whom have become great friends, are something I will always treasure,” reflects Founder and President, Seth Matson.
This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our dedicated board members, who selflessly gave their free time month after month, our sponsors and donors, and the public who stood by us. There are countless individuals, businesses who contributed to our mission, and while it’s impossible to name everyone, please know we are deeply grateful to all who helped in any way.
For those still passionate about beach cleanups, many NGOs continue the vital work of keeping our beaches clean and safeguarding our oceans, waves, and marine life (below). We salute their tireless efforts.

P.S. don’t be surprised if you see us cleaning the beaches in the future, free from the constraints of a non-profit. Stay tuned!
