Dear Clara Barton Chapter Friends, Please help us over the next month by supporting the DAR Clara Barton Chapter with our Wreaths Across America campaign to honor those Veterans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom and are remembered with a special tribute in December. Proceeds for wreaths sold go to the Clara Barton Chapter Nursing Scholarship at Golden West College.

—Excerpt from the Declaration of Independence, as adopted by Congress, July 4, 1776

The Lee Resolution for independence was passed on July 2, 1776 with no opposing votes. The Committee of Five had drafted the Declaration to be ready when Congress voted on independence. John Adams, a leader in pushing for independence, had persuaded the committee to select Thomas Jefferson to compose the original draft of the document, which Congress edited to produce the final version.

The Declaration was a formal explanation of why Congress had voted to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War.

* John Adams, representative of Massachusetts, who became the second U.S. President

*Thomas Jefferson, representative of Virginia, who became the third U.S. President

*Benjamin Franklin, representative of Pennsylvania, known as one of the most famous of the Founding Fathers and the first U.S. Minister to France

* Roger Sherman, representative of Connecticut, the only person to sign all four of the U.S. state papers: the Continental Association, the Declaration, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution

*Robert Livingston, representative of New York, who later negotiated the Louisiana Purchase as the Minister to France

The Society of Military Widows is dedicated solely to the needs, concerns, and welfare of military surviving spouses and dependent children. It exists to preserve and enhance benefits to surviving spouses and their children -- to help survivors and their children face the future with courage and determination, and to honor the memory of our military spouses who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today is the 76th anniversary of D-Day. From General Eisenhower’s Orders of the Day on the evening before the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944:
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of N**i tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.

But this is the year of 1944! Much has happened since the N**i triumphs of 1940–41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

Four years after the United States won its independence from England, on May 25, 1787, delegates representing every state except Rhode Island convened at Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania State House for the Constitutional Convention. The building, which is now known as Independence Hall, had earlier seen the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and the signing of the Articles of Confederation. The assembly immediately discarded the idea of amending the Articles of Confederation and set about drawing up a new scheme of government. Revolutionary War hero George Washington, a delegate from Virginia, was elected convention president.

Its largest city, Baltimore, has a long history as a major seaport. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, sits at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, home to the National Aquarium and Maryland Science Center. Annapolis

Annapolis, Maryland’s capital city, is on Chesapeake Bay. Its historic district includes 18th-century brick houses and the domed 1700s Maryland State House. The sprawling waterfront grounds of the United States Naval Academy feature beaux arts architecture, monuments and a naval history museum.

National Submarine Day
April 11, 2021 is commemorated by the United States submarine community as Submarine Day, the anniversary of April 11, 1900 when the American Government purchased its first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland. USS Holland was the United States Navy's first commissioned submarine, named for her Irish-American inventor, John Philip Holland, although not the first submarine of the US Navy, which was the 1862 Alligator. The boat was originally laid down as Holland VI, and launched on 17 May 1897. 

USS California (SSN-781), is the eighth Virginia-class submarine, and the seventh United States Navy ship named for the state of California.

It was launched on November 14, 2010 and commissioned October 29, 2011.
Class and type: Virginia-class submarine
Length: 114.9 m (377.0 ft) Beam: 10.3 m (33.8 ft)
