At yesterday’s weekly meeting, we learned about literacy programs offered through Huntingdon County Child & Adult Development Corporation. Rotarian Stephanie Weaver, HCC&ADC’s executive director, introduced Carol Allenbaugh, adult education & family literacy director, and Matt Scott, student support coordinator. Carol, who has been with HCC&ADC for 32 years, told our club that even though the agency began in 1973, its personnel strive to raise awareness about services. “We’ve been like the best kept secret in Huntingdon County,” she says. Carol and Matt shared several success stories about helping mothers create a habit of reading to young children and helping adults meet education/employment goals. “Adult students come to us for several reasons,” Matt explained. “One might be to get their high school diploma, or maybe they just want to brush up on skills, including computer literacy skills.”
In the past four years, the family literacy effort has benefited 58 families, while the adult education program has seen 235 enrolled students. Many HCC&ADC learners attend courses on and off for years while overcoming transportation and childcare challenges and employment obligations. Adult students have gone on to become commercial truck drivers, certified nursing assistants and licensed practical nurses. One student pursued a degree in psychology while another attained a B.S. in Education. For more info, go to: www.hccadc.org
