Let's Talk about it Tuesday!

Did you know that our food and hygiene pantry is just a small portion of what we actually do here at the Center? Our main mission is to help families in West Tennessee with the prevention of child abuse.

Our main focus is to not subject children to telling their story multiple times to multiple people, which is intimidating and often confusing. When a child comes to the Center, they tell their story once, to one qualified person while a select few watch from a seperate room. Calm. Quiet. Relaxed.

Also we find that one of the biggest challenges families face is not always a lack of resources but knowing where to start.

Our organization connects our families to the right local support quickly and clearly. We collaborate with children's services, mental health therapists, medical professionals, and law enforcement so families are not sent in circles. Our victim advocate is with them from the very beginning, through court proceedings, and beyond.

We offer support in every way possible to the victims of child abuse and educate the community in how to bring awareness to a life-changing experience.

That's who we are, and West Tennessee is blessed to have offices full of individuals who want to help in 20 counties! Call your local Center today and ask how you can help! It takes a village!

Let's start the week off with some Monday Myths!

Myth: It is easy to identify a victim of child abuse or neglect.

Fact: Itโ€™s not that simple.

Although there may be telltale signs of some types of child abuse, not all victims exhibit obvious signs. Even the best parents or most astute adults may not recognize the signs of child abuse, which is not an indictment on those who failed to recognize that abuse was happening.

Thankful Thursday!

Do you know about our Buttons for Bravery?

When a child does a forensic interview here at the Center, they get to choose a button. This button represents their story, their bravery, their courage in the face of what has happened to them. After the interview, they get to add their button to the countless stories already in this jar and choose a new stuffed friend to go home with. These stuffed animals are important to them and we are grateful for organizations like the NW Council. Dana Cobb dropped off recent attendees' stuffed donations yesterday, and they will be integrated into this menagerie of love as needed. There are too many buttons, but we know those buttons represent children who had somewhere safe to go, someone to hold their hand, and something so many others outside West Tennessee do not have. We appreciate the kindness and support of our community who know what a treasure we have in the existence of a place like this. Thank you. We are blessed.

It's a Teaching Tuesday!

Teaching children about touch involves establishing clear rules about body ownership and personal boundaries. Frame touch as "Safe/Okay" and "Unsafe/Not Okay" rather than strictly good or bad. This helps them understand without feeling guilt or confusion, and empowers them to trust their feelings.

1. Establish the "Swimsuit Rule"!
Teach children that the parts of their body covered by a bathing suit (chest, buttocks, and between the legs) are private. Explain that your body belongs to you and you are the boss of it. No one is allowed to look at, touch, or ask them to touch these private areas.

The Only Exception: Medical professionals (like a doctor) or a parent can touch these areas to keep the child clean or healthy, but a parent should always be present.

2. Define Safe Touches!
Safe touches make a child feel happy, loved, and comfortable. Examples include hugs from family, high-fives, and pats on the back. Note: Even safe touches aren't mandatory. Let children know they can say no to hugs or tickling if they don't feel like it, which teaches them to respect their own boundaries and those of others.

3. Define Unsafe Touches!
An unsafe touch is any touch that makes the child feel scared, confused, or physically hurt. It includes hitting, pinching, or pushing. It includes any unwanted touch on their private parts. It also includes situations where someone asks them to keep a "secret" about how they were touched.

4. Give Them an Action Plan! Empower your child with clear, actionable steps if an unsafe touch occurs. Say NO: Tell them they have permission to say, "No!" or "Don't touch me!" in a loud voice. Run Away: Teach them to get away from the person quickly. Tell an Adult: Identify a circle of "Trusted Adults" (such as parents, grandparents, teachers, or caregivers) they must go to right away. Assure them that they will not get in trouble for speaking up.

Talking about these rules with your child gives them the confidence they need to stand strong in the protection of their boundaries and their body!
