We believe children learn best when they can choose, discover, question, understand and be unique.

The concept of The Children’s Schoolhouse was started in 1971 by a group of Davidson parents looking for a preschool based on sound principles of early childhood development. The belief that children are naturally curious and intuitive people who thrive by exploring and discovering the world around them has remained consistent through the years. Our curriculum is built on a trust in the power of play and on the concept that children learn primarily on doing rather than listening. We use an emergent curriculum to encourage discovery learning through hands-on activities, open-ended situations and play in numerous centers. We combine this with a “multi-age approach” reinforcing the benefits of cooperative play, while assisting teachers in supporting each child’s individual needs and talents. We are a cooperative, therefore families play a critical role in all of this, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Our second week of school was full of dirt, song, and sweet friendships. The children planted kale, lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and peas —we can’t wait to watch them grow right alongside our students! 🌿

Between the gorgeous pink crepe myrtles blooming by the bird feeder and the kids busy with mini watering cans in the garden (and still rocking their hard hats from last week!), the school is full of life right now.
