🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿The Kennedy plant badge was the Oak!

Before there was tartan, there was the plant badge. 🌿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Long before a single thread of clan tartan was woven, Scotland's clans identified themselves by the plants they wore in their bonnets. Each clan had its own: a sprig of heather, a sprig of oak, a sprig of holly. For Clan Campbell, one of the most powerful clans in all of Scottish history, that plant was the wild bog myrtle, known in Gaelic as roid or raideag,, a fragrant, silver-leafed shrub that grew on every Highland bog and moorland from Argyll to the far north.

Wearing it was not decoration. It was declaration. When a Campbell clansman pinned bog myrtle to his bonnet, he was announcing his blood, his loyalty, and his chief without speaking a single word. In a world before surnames were standardised and tartans were codified, the plant badge was the oldest form of clan identity Scotland ever had.

The bog myrtle still grows wild across the Scottish Highlands today, its leaves releasing a sharp, resinous scent when crushed, the same scent that would have filled the air at every Campbell gathering for centuries. 🌿

Here's a public radio piece on curling stones and Ailsa Craig (although the Kennedys aren't specifically mentioned):

The sport of curling has fans around the world, despite its humble origins on frozen lakes in Scotland in the 1500s. But the fandom gets a massive boost when the Winter Olympics come around, when a big order is placed at the company that manufactures all of the curling stones used at the Games. Repo...
