Start School Later New York

Start School Later New York SSL New York, a chapter of the national non-profit advocates for healthy school start times. Let's end it. Join Us in protecting teen health!

Chronic sleep deprivation is harming teen brain function, mental health, and decision-making. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teenagers require between 8-10 hours of sleep per night in order to be healthy, happy, and successful. Unfortunately, many schools across the country start classes as early as 7:00 AM, which makes it difficult for students to get the sleep they need. This can le

ad to a variety of problems, including decreased academic performance, increased rates of depression and anxiety, and a higher risk of accidents and injuries. Sleep deprivation in teenagers can have serious negative effects on their health and well-being, including increased rates of depression and su***de. Chronic sleep deprivation can also have a negative impact on academic performance, attendance, and behavior. By requiring schools to start later, we can help ensure that our students are healthy, happy, and successful. Start School Later, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works at local, state, and national levels to raise awareness about and advocate for safe and healthy school hours. Feeling thrown off by the time change? 😴

Even adults struggle to fall asleep or wake up on schedule after daylight saving time ends — and that’s just a one-hour shift. Now imagine being a teen whose body naturally doesn’t get sleepy until around 11 p.m. — every single night.

If one hour throws us off, imagine what years of sleep deprivation do to them.
Let’s give students a fair start — by starting school later. 🌙

Ever wonder why your teen is struggling to focus, feeling anxious, or running on empty? The dots all lead back to one thing: sleep. 💤
Join Stanford’s Dr. Rafael Pelayo for a powerful hour that connects sleep, mental health, learning, and safety — and shows how we can help teens thrive by working with their biology, not against it.
