On July 4th, 2025, the place Rita knew as home became the setting for a harrowing fight for survival.

What followed was a long and difficult road through the aftermath, but Rita's story is not only one of what was lost. It is also a story of the people who showed up.
Neighbors. Volunteers. Organizations. Friends and strangers alike.

Hunt Preservation Society, through a disaster case management grant from The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, and others stepped in to help Rita and her family navigate the days that followed, offering support when it was needed most.

And when Rita reflects on everything that happened, one feeling rises above all others: Gratitude.

We are grateful to Rita for sharing her story and allowing us to share it with our community.

“My overwhelming sense is gratitude.” After surviving the July 4th flood, Rita Odom has a story of fear, resilience, and the people who showed up when she needed them most.
Tomorrow, we share Rita's story.

Your voice is critical to our community's recovery.

If your home, property, or business sustained damage from the July flooding, please take a few minutes to complete both of the assessments below.

We are still very much in the assessment and data-gathering phase of recovery. The information you provide is incredibly important and helps inform decisions about funding, programs, resources, and long-term recovery efforts. Every completed assessment helps create a clearer picture of our community's needs.

Even if you've already spoken with an organization or reported your damage elsewhere, please complete both assessments if you haven't already.

Today, Hunt Preservation Society had the incredible honor of hosting 100+ Camp Mystic alumni who traveled to the area to serve our community this weekend.

Partnering with Operation Blessing, KerrTogether, and GEM (Global Empowerment Mission), these dedicated volunteers spent their time mucking and gutting homes, delivering essential supplies, and assembling snack bags for other volunteer groups serving across the region.

What makes their service even more meaningful is that many of these volunteers are survivors of the devastating Fourth of July flood themselves. Having experienced loss firsthand, they chose to return and help others begin rebuilding.

To every volunteer: thank you for your compassion, your hard work, and your servant’s heart. You are bringing hope when it’s needed most, and our community is stronger because of you.
