Tree planting season is over for now, and so GTA volunteers and staff have moved into our summer schedule of events. While South Baltimore and Brooklyn area fishing and hiking trails are dry and dusty now, summer rains will make for muddy walking and increased erosion into tidal waterways that are often just a few feet away. We recently worked with community members from Highlands and Brooklyn to clean up and mulch over 250 feet of fishing trail in a public park. 10 cubic yards of mulch was moved down the trail, and the trail's final improvement (removement of invasive bush honeysuckle "trees") will require some government permitting and coordination. Thank you so much to our community volunteers!

Our staff has been working for almost a year on propagating Allegheny Chinkapin seedlings for use in Baltimore area parklands. Historically common before area deforestation and the chestnut blight, these stresses led to very limited natural reproductive of the species. Ironically, the tree is resilient to air pollution, smog, and polluted rains, and would fare quite well in our area parks. Stay tuned for updates!

Sunday Scaries - American chestnuts and chinquapins (a smaller cousin) were some of the most common hardwood trees in the eastern American forests of the 1800s. Due to the Asiatic chestnut blight in the early 1900s, very few large chestnut or chinquapin trees remain east of the Mississippi River. Our greenhouse work (chinquapin) and a new partnership with the Maryland Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation are working towards understanding the possible future role of both tree species in Maryland's forests.

It's a Freaky Friday! Today's loveable freak is the Royal Catchfly (Silene regia). Sometimes confused as a carnivorous plant, all catchfly species deploy a sticky sap in their flower to trap insects. However, the unlucky bugs are not digested, they simply die in place. It's an unusual plant to see, as it's a "calciphilic specialist," requiring a high pH, gravelly, well drained soil rich in mineral or organic calcium.

One of the most intangible but important concepts for suburban habitat management in the I-95 corridor, is that of the tipping point (1800s) when secondary forests (land previously cleared) became more common than primary (never fully cleared) forests. This article from the Journal of Biogeography demonstrated that even the region's remaining primary forests, now seem to be on similar ecological trajectories as secondary forests, partly due to generalist (or "mesophytic") plant species' ability to colonize any kind of forest.

Another great day of stewardship at Southwest Area Park! Volunteers with Green Trust Alliance completed trail maintenance and trash cleanup along the fishing trail, helping stabilize erosion and improve access for visitors of all abilities. Thank you to everyone who donated their time and energy to make this community resource safer, cleaner, and more welcoming for all.

Our fishermen friends who volunteered proved that conservation and recreation go hand in hand. Those who spend time enjoying our natural resources are often among the first to step up and help protect and improve them.

Thank you Chad Marquardt and Tommy from Amped Up Outdoors, you guys are difference makers in the community! This would not have been possible without you! Thank you Lansdowne Improvement Association and Southwest Visions Foundation for your support! As always, we're extremely grateful for our partnership with Park staff and their support for each volunteer project we implement in the area.

We were super excited to return to the Elizabeth's Landing Community to lead their Lawn-to-Trees Spring Planting on Baltimore's Stoney Creek! 20 volunteers from the Community, the Anne Arundel County Watershed Stewards Academy, and Rupperts Landscaping planted 70 native trees and 10 shrubs on this sun baked lot near the community entrance. This is our second of hopefully many projects in Elizabeth's Landing!
