Borderlands Horse Sanctuary

Borderlands Horse Sanctuary We are a 501(c)3 non-profit sanctuary and provide a permanent and dignified retirement for senior horses. At that time, they were a private operation.

Borderlands Horse Sanctuary started in May 2006 when they took in a yearling stud headed to auction. In 2011, Borderlands Horse Sanctuary realized that there was a need to focus on senior horses who had provided for their owners throughout the years. So although there are younger horses, the focus now is on horses that are 20 years old or older who need a dignified retirement home. In 2016, Border

lands became a non-profit charity within the state of South Dakota. This change in status has opened the doors to allow additional senior horses a place to call "home". Horses that arrive at Borderlands are “home” and will spend their final years at the sanctuary. When a horse come to Borderlands, they become family. Each horse is checked daily for quality of life and to adjust any feeding routines. Borderlands is home to 19 horses ranging in age from 33 to 11 and take in all breeds. Borderlands also has a long-term foster program for those looking to learn the ins and outs of senior horse care.

We are excited to announce this summer's Pastures and Pages Summer Reading Challenge!

Challenge Dates:
June 1, 2026 - September 5, 2026

Who Can Participate:
All ages welcome!!!

How It Works:
Complete activities to earn a bingo (5 in a row: across, down, or diagonal). For every bingo completed, receive an exclusive Borderlands Horse Sanctuary Trading Card. Readers who complete a blackout (all squares completed) receive an additional Trading Card. Readers will also be entered into a prize drawing for the first bingo they complete.

How to Submit
Send a picture of your bingo card to: [email protected]. Include your name and mailing address if you want to receive a physical trading card.

It's Children’s Book Week, which is the longest-running literacy initiative in the United States. Today we are showcasing another horse series that many may recognize.

Black Stallion has been a staple on the shelves of my childhood and we recently started reading the books for my own kids. While one might not be thrilled with horses, he was engrossed in the action that took place. Who doesn't love adventure, shipwrecks, races, and more thrills?!

May marks a major milestone for us: 20 incredible years of providing rescue and sanctuary to horses in need! We're filled with gratitude as we reflect on the countless stories of horses who've called Borderlands home. Each horse has taught us valuable lessons and reminded us of the importance of compassion and kindness. 🐴❤️

May is also Adopt a Horse Month, and while we don't adopt out horses, we're dedicated to protecting and caring for them in their golden years. We're seeking long-term fosters and sponsors to help us make a greater impact.

Today, we're shining the spotlight on Maverick, one of our beloved long-time residents. He was one of the horses we watched across the road, and when his owner needed to rehome him, we knew we had to say yes! Maverick is a true original, with a mischievous streak a mile wide. He's destroyed an automatic waterer, ripped siding off the barn, and even removed screens from the trailer. Despite his antics, we adore him. He's taught us so much about patience, understanding, and the importance of seeing the best in every horse.

Maverick is looking for a sponsor to help us provide the care he deserves. Will you consider becoming a full-time sponsor ($100) or partial sponsor ($25 or $50)? Your support means the world to us and the horses in our care.

Founded in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running literacy initiative in the United States and runs from May 4 through May 10. In honor of this special week, we are showcasing children's horse books and series that are near and dear to our hearts.

The Billy and Blaze series was a constant read growing up. Not only was the story engaging, the pictures are stunning. But I'm partial to anything that C.W. Anderson has written.

Don't forget to join us every month for our Pastures and Pages Reading Club where we send a reading prompt and learn about all the amazing books that we need to add to our "To Be Read" pile!
