In the summer of 2012 a group of women met to determine the feasibility of bringing a community garden to Hull. With the enthusiasm of our Town Manager and Selectmen, we were invited to look at available land and we subsequently determined that the former “Showboat” property along GW Boulevard would be an ideal site -- It had previously been developed so there was a water line; it was flat and fen
ced and accessible by public transportation…and it would provide a beautiful and welcoming entrance along the primary thoroughfare into Hull! After months of meetings with Town departments, resident abutters, utility companies, and after placing several notices in the Hull Times about our work, Hull Community Garden board members met with Selectmen on April 9, 2013 and received approval to move forward! The garden now contains 25 raised bed plots, some 4’x4’, some 4’x8’, available to residents for a small fee intended to cover the cost of water. Some plots are reserved for residents who are physically challenged, veterans, seniors and youth groups who are willing to garden to benefit Wellspring. We're pleased to have a waiting list of excited gardeners! Gardeners may choose to grow vegetables, flowers or herbs, and will be expected to garden organically. All participants will be asked to assist in general maintenance of the common areas and to show respect for the garden and the neighborhood by removing trash, harvesting produce when ready and leaving the beds in good condition in the fall, removing all plants and debris. Gardeners receive the combination to the lock at the fence gate and may garden between dawn and dusk, while respecting noise levels and traffic safety for the welfare and comfort of the neighborhood and fellow gardeners. We're now in our 8th growing season (2021) and have enjoyed a great amount of support from the community through donations of tools, wood, shrubs and funds that enable us to pay for liability insurance (required by the Town) and have some discretionary funds for unanticipated expenses. Through grants and fundraisers, we're proud to say, that our dream of turning an empty, unkempt lot into a thriving, environmentally sustainable garden!
