POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 333 (FOP) joined with Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino on Friday to honor the lives lost in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Gathered at the Sheriff’s Office in Poughkeepsie, next to a twisted piece of steel from the World Trade Center, speakers called on the attendees to never forget those deadly attacks.

Mark Lieberman, a retired police officer, represented the FOP, and noted that his organization had worked with the sheriff to secure the World Trade Center steel and have it brought to Poughkeepsie. He took a moment to recall deceased members, including Louie “The Crazy Cuban” Juncosa, who passed away in 2025. Juncosa had advocated tirelessly for the 9/11 Memorial area at the sheriff’s office, and Lieberman noted the importance of his advocacy and the memorial.

While reminding everyone to stay vigilant and observant to help prevent future attacks, Sheriff Imperati also called for peace and tolerance in our communities. “Not only should we never forget September 11, 2001, but we also need to remember the days and weeks following the attacks.” Sheriff Imperati encouraged the attendees to recall how the country put differences aside and united on a number of fronts. “Everyone was somber, yet considerate of their neighbors following the attacks. Differences were put aside and neighbors came together for peace. Everyone worked together and we need to remember how to do that.”

Undersheriff Jason Mark tendered a somber rendition of Taps as the American flag at the Sheriff’s Office was lowered to half-staff.

There are several openings within the Safety team for the Arlington Central School District in Dutchess County. Our team is currently comprised of approximately 90% retired law enforcement officers. While we are primarily based at the High School, we may be utilized at any school within the district.

The position follows the school calendar (Monday through Friday) with weekends, holidays, and summers off . The school district has posted these openings on their website. Additionally, the NYS retirement $35,000 annual cap currently does not affect retirees working for a public school (this exemption is set to expire in June 2027 unless extended). A valid NYS Security Guard license is required for hire.

The Arlington Central School District is currently recruiting for 6 (six) Security Guards for its Arlington High School. This is a part-time position which involves patrolling an assigned area in order to safeguard our student and employee population as well as property. They may include providing safety at off-hours events, such as sporting events — both home and away. Security Guards typically work in 6-hour shifts to be determined by the building principal or designated administrator. Interested applicants should have experience working with children and young adults and be able to de-escalate difficult situations.

Typical work may include but is not limited to the following:

Make rounds of the area assigned to;
Assist in traffic control during the arrival and dismissal of students;
Maintain order in hallways, study halls, dining areas, gymnasiums, etc.;
Inspects doors, windows and locks;
Maintains a lookout for irregular occurrences;
Intervenes in classroom confrontations and student fights if necessary, attempt to calm students removed from class for disciplinary reasons;
May es**rt students to and from special appointments;
Informs superiors of observations of student behavior;
May maintain simple records of unusual occurrences;
Related work as required.

Honoring Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel Barnett

It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Sergeant/Station Commander Nigel Barnett, who was killed in a motorcycle crash this morning while traveling to work.

Sergeant Barnett was a 19-year veteran of the New York State Police, serving with dedication and distinction throughout his career. His commitment to public safety, his leadership, and his steady presence will be deeply missed by the members of our Division and the communities he served.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Barnett’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts as we honor his service and sacrifice.

RIP Kevin,🙏🏼🤬

It is with deep sadness that the Putnam County Sheriff's Office announces the passing of Sheriff Kevin J. McConville on August 22, 2025.

Sheriff McConville began his tenure on January 1, 2022, after being elected to a four-year term. Prior to becoming Sheriff, McConville had served with the MTA Police Department for thirty years, beginning as a patrolman and rising through the ranks, retiring as the Chief. He worked during the 9/11 terror attacks and served as Chief during the London and Madrid bombings on their commuter transport system, implementing plans and responses in incident reduction and management.

A lifelong resident of Putnam County, as Sheriff, he worked diligently to improve the working conditions for the men and women of the department so they could better serve the residents of the county. His accomplishments included achieving DCJS state accreditation in law enforcement, obtaining a new records management system, improving radio communication systems to greatly reduce areas of poor reception, and obtaining newer vehicles.

Sheriff McConville devoted his life to serving others with integrity, courage, and compassion. Our hearts are heavy as we stand with the McConville family, but we will honor his legacy with pride and continue the mission that we have to serve and protect Putnam County.
