📣 ALABAMA, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

If you had the opportunity to ask one question about parole at a national gathering of advocates, attorneys, and experts, what would you ask?

On November 14–15, On The Way Home Reentry will be attending Realizing Release: Parole Transformation and the Fight for Decarceration in Chicago, hosted by the National Parole Transformation Project.

This national convening will bring together people from across the country to discuss parole practices, challenges, accountability, transparency, and efforts to improve parole systems.

And we don't want to go just representing our organization. We want to bring the voices, questions, and concerns of the people directly affected by parole in Alabama.

Whether you are incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, a family member, an advocate, a victim or survivor, or simply someone concerned about how parole works, your perspective matters.

💬 So we're asking YOU:

If you could sit across the table from people working on parole issues nationwide, what would you want them to know?

What question would you ask?

What concerns do you believe deserve more attention?

What would you like us to learn from other states?

We cannot promise that every question will be asked during the event, but we can promise to listen, take your concerns seriously, and use your input to help guide the conversations we have and the information we bring back to Alabama.

👇 Leave your questions or thoughts in the comments, or send us a private message if you would rather not share publicly.

Your voice deserves to be part of the conversation, even if you cannot be in the room.

💙 We're Growing, and We'd Love for You to Grow With Us!

On The Way Home (OTWH) is looking for dedicated, compassionate individuals from across Alabama who are interested in actively serving on our Board of Directors.

Since founding OTWH in 2023, we've continued to grow our programs, build partnerships, and support individuals and families navigating the challenges of incarceration and reentry.

But meaningful change takes more than one person or one organization. It takes people willing to come together, share their knowledge, open doors, and take action.

We're not simply looking to fill seats. We're looking for people who want to be involved.

Whether your background is in business, education, law, healthcare, social services, fundraising, community advocacy, or you have lived experience with incarceration and reentry, your perspective could make a difference.

You don't have to know everything about reentry. You just need to believe in our mission and be willing to help move it forward.

❤️ If you've been looking for an opportunity to use your experience, connections, or talents to make a meaningful impact, we'd love to talk with you.

📍 Open to individuals throughout Alabama.

📩 Interested? Send us a private message or email [email protected] to learn more.

Today we were excited to be able to participate in Octsober Fest in Birmingham with a bunch of really great organizations.

One of our clients was able to attend with me and help with unloading, set up, and reloading all our stuff. He was also a HUGE help talking to people who came to our table and was able to get him some resources as well.

Thank you Aids Alabama for allowing us to be a part of this great event.

Come out and see us today.

Today was family visit day with one of our On The Way Home clients. ❤️

Sometimes case management looks like applications, referrals, phone calls, paperwork, and trying to solve problems.

And sometimes it looks like sitting down together over a homemade meal and simply talking about life.

Today I packed up a fan he needed, along with a few other things he had asked for, and headed out for a visit. He recently had some dental work done and hasn’t been able to eat very much, so I made him a homemade chicken and potato soup that would be easier for him to eat. We sat down, had lunch together, and caught up.

Our client is continuing to adjust to life after incarceration, and today gave us time to talk about how things are going, what he is experiencing where he is staying, and some of the things he wants to work toward next.

Reentry doesn’t end when someone walks out of the prison gates.

There are IDs to obtain, obligations to address, appointments to make, jobs to find, transportation issues to solve, health needs to navigate, and years—or sometimes decades—of life to catch up on.

But there are also ordinary moments that matter.

Sitting across the table from someone. Sharing a homemade meal. Listening. Laughing. Talking about what comes next. Reminding someone through your actions that they don’t have to figure everything out alone.

That’s what On The Way Home is about.

We don’t just help someone prepare to come home.

We keep showing up after they get here.

No One Comes Home Alone. ❤️

💙 Two Months Home — and Moving Forward

Today I had the chance to check in with one of our On The Way Home clients at a Celebrate Recovery event.

He has officially been home for two months, and every time we check in, we see more progress. He has secured a new job making good money, he is showing up, taking care of his responsibilities, and continuing to work toward building a stable life after incarceration. He's doing the work, and we're here to support and encourage.

But reentry support doesn't end when someone gets a job or finds a place to stay.

Today we brought him some food for his lunches, homemade brownies, homemade breakfast muffins, toiletries, a laundry basket, a gift card to help with other necessities, and a resource book he can keep and use as new needs come up.

These may seem like small things, but when someone is starting over, small things can make a big difference.
This is what case management at On The Way Home looks like. It isn't simply handing someone a list of resources and wishing them well. It's staying connected. It's checking in. It's asking, "How are you doing? What do you need? What's going well? Where are you struggling?" And then helping however we can while encouraging each person to continue taking responsibility for their own future.

We are incredibly happy about the progress he's making. Two months home. Working. Handling his responsibilities. Growing. And doing better and better.

There is still a journey ahead, but this is exactly why we believe reentry requires continued support, accountability, resources, and community.

At On The Way Home, our goal is simple:

No One Comes Home Alone. 🖤

If you'd like to help us continue providing practical support like this to people rebuilding their lives after incarceration, please consider donating or purchasing an item from one of our wish lists. Every contribution helps us meet a real need for a real person working toward a successful second chance.
