This dynamic 90-minute workshop pulls back the curtain on the art and craft of directing, giving participants an insider’s look at how great productions come together. Led by an experienced theatre professional, you'll explore how directors shape a creative vision, inspire actors, solve challenges, and collaborate with designers and production teams to create memorable theatrical experiences.

Information on the presenter:

David is an actor, director, and theatre educator at Case Western Reserve University. As an actor, he made his film debut in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan and has appeared in numerous films and television series, including Grey's Anatomy, Dexter, House, and Mayor of Kingstown. He has performed alongside acclaimed actors including Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, and Regina King. Locally, he has worked with leading theatre organizations throughout Northeast Ohio, and as a director has helmed productions for Case Western Reserve University, Beck Center for the Arts, None Too Fragile, and Clague Theatre.

Join us for a one-of-a-kind experience featuring an exclusive tour of Audio-Technica’s North American Headquarters, where you'll explore cutting-edge audio technology, hear immersive listening demonstrations, visit the anechoic chamber, and learn how microphones are tested and used throughout the industry.

Then, head to the Barlow Community Center Theater for a hands-on microphone workshop. Experiment with different microphone types, learn the secrets of feedback, EQ, and voice lift, and gain practical sound skills you can use in your next production.

Information on the presenters:
Gary is the Broadcast Business Development Director for Audio-Technica in Stow, Ohio, where he works with professional users and resellers while helping shape future broadcast products. His background includes roles as an applications engineer, product manager, and freelance audio/video technician. He holds a B.A. in Electronic Media Production from Ashland University and certifications in product management and IP audio.

Brent is a Broadcast Sales Engineer at Audio-Technica with more than 10 years of experience providing technical support and developing solutions for broadcasters and production companies. A passionate engineer, musician, and educator, he has supported major international sporting events and trained future audio professionals at institutions including SAE Institute, CRAS, and Harvard University.

Consensual Crafting: An Introduction to Staged Intimacy Practices

This engaging and practical 90-minute workshop introduces community theatre artists to the fundamentals of staged intimacy in a supportive environment focused on telling stories involving physical closeness safely, respectfully, and effectively.

Participants will explore key vocabulary, industry-standard intimacy protocols, and consent-based practices, including communication around moments of touch, pre-production considerations, boundary checks, and tools for self-advocacy and collaboration.

The workshop concludes with an open Q&A for reflection and real-world application. While no touch is required and observation is always welcome, participants may choose to engage in a simple connection exercise, such as a handshake, for practical application.

Information on the Presenter:

Alexis is a Midwest-based Intimacy Director, Fight Director, Director, and Movement Specialist dedicated to consent, equity, and safety in performance spaces. Her work spans regional theatre, New York City, Europe, and Asia, and she is certified in Michael Chekhov Physical Acting and the Margolis Method, with additional expertise in viewpoints, mask work, and contact improvisation.

Her intimacy and fight direction credits include Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Shakespeare Theatre Company, and Broadway’s Fool for Love and Macbeth.

Alexis holds an MFA in Movement Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, where she teaches Movement, Acting, and Stage Combat while helping implement consent and safety protocols. She also teaches certification courses with IDC and is a member of SDC, ATME, and AEA.

Tari hasworked for the Dramatists Guild of America for over 25 years and was recently named Managing Director of Membership & Outreach. She has represented the Guild at conferences around the globe, including KC/ACTF, BroadwayCon, the Austin Film Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Colorado New Play Summit, and the Association for Writers and Writing Programs (AWP). Before joining the Guild, Tari worked as an actress and/or theater administrator at theaters across the country. She also taught Theater at Fordham University in New York City. She is an alum at Kent State University and Wayne State University.

Jenny(She/Her) paints as a scenic artist throughout Northeast Ohio. She is currently on staff as Scenic Charge for the Cleveland Playhouse and is the resident scenic charge for Near West Theater. She has taught scenic painting at Baldwin Wallace University and regularly paints their main stage shows. She loves how close the Ohio theater community is and has painted for CMA’s Parade the Circle, Cleveland Opera Theater, Blank Canvas, Inlet Dance, Ballet Theater of Ohio, Carousel Dinner Theater, Sign Stage, Chagrin Arts Academy, and more. She is excited to have recently painted the drop for the newly launched touring show “What do you do with a Problem” for Inlet Dance company.
