Within the last few months, NYSDOH WIC has recently launched long awaited and needed new food packages; our state is poised for a new influx of participants with more flexibilities and broader cultural relevance for a diverse population such as ours. While there have been many modernizations to WIC’s program and shopping experience since the pandemic, these are USDA’s first major food package changes in 15 years and will make food packages more relevant for a diverse population (i.e. more options for whole grains, lactose-free and plant-based milk substitutes, and options for substituting eggs, juice, and nut butters), while also providing additional improvements and flexibilities for participating families. WIC is available to income-eligible parents, infants, and children regardless of immigration status, making it one of the most accessible nutrition programs for immigrant communities who may not qualify for other public benefits. For many families, WIC is not just a nutrition program—it is a trusted point of contact with the health system, a bridge to prenatal and pediatric care, and a source of consistent support during the earliest and most critical years of a child’s life. "WIC participation in New York State has grown substantially in recent years, reaching over 462,000 New Yorkers in October 2025—the highest participation in a decade and a 28% increase since 2020. This growth reflects meaningful program modernizations, including remote appointment options and expanded outreach, that have made WIC more accessible to working families navigating busy schedules and transportation barriers." In honor of Earth Day, this is a great opportunity to keep our water and land resources pure. If you miss Takeback Day, there are disposal boxes in the community year round.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Our office will be hosting a collection site outside the Paul J. Proper Sr. Public Safety Building, 85 Industrial Tract, Hudson, NY 12534.

Sponsored by the DEA, National Prescription Drug Take Back Day began in 2010 as part of a nationwide effort to provide a safe, convenient, and anonymous way for people to dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. The goal is to prevent prescription drug misuse and protect our communities and waterways from improper disposal.

This is a safe, secure, and anonymous drop-off. No questions asked. We encourage residents to take advantage of this important public safety initiative, especially while they are spring cleaning.
