Fallen Hero: Eagle Scout and Soldier Makes Ultimate Sacrifice. 🎖️
🇺🇸

Scouting is not all about badges. It is a lived experience that gives youth purpose and helps shape their direction in life. For Declan Coady, that journey led him to become an Eagle Scout with Troop 242 in Des Moines, IA, begin an Information Technology undergraduate degree at Drake University, and simultaneously enlist in the U.S. Army. 🛡️

Tonight, we honor the memory of SGT Declan Coady, a true hero and one of six Army Reservists who lost their lives in Kuwait during the second day of the conflict. 🕊️ Assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command out of Des Moines, Declan followed a path familiar to many Scouts, stepping forward to serve his country shortly after graduating from Valley High School. 🎓

Halfway through his degree program, Declan was mobilized with his unit to Kuwait in support of U.S. Central Command. It was there, on Sunday, that a drone attack struck the operations center where he was working. 🎖️ His military honors—including the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon—stand as a testament to his dedicated service.

Declan earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 2020. For his Eagle Project, he constructed 12 Adirondack chairs for a local youth facility, creating lasting spaces for young people to gather and connect. 🪑 He shared this prestigious rank with his brother, Rowan, representing a deep family commitment to leadership and service. 🤝

Through Scouting, academics, and military service, Declan made a profound impact on his community in a short amount of time. He lived out the ideals of character and citizenship long before he ever wore a uniform, proving that a true hero is defined by the lives they touch and the courage they show in the face of duty. 🎗️

Message of Condolence 🙏
"We express our deepest sorrow over the untimely passing of Sergeant Declan Coady and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His ultimate sacrifice in the service of his country and humanity will never be forgotten. As an Eagle Scout, the bravery and leadership he displayed serve as an enduring inspiration to future generations of Scouts. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time." 🕯️

Scouts don’t back down from a challenge — even in cold, snowy weather!

This weekend, Hudson Scouting America Troop 60 braved the elements to sort cans for redemption. This fundraiser is our primary source of funding for campouts, activities, and adventures that make Scouting such a meaningful experience for our youth.

We want to give a huge THANK YOU to two local businesses that made this possible:

Nick Clough with NCC Garage in Hudson — thank you for generously letting us use your shop so our Scouts could sort cans out of the cold. Your support truly helped keep our Scouts safe and comfortable!

Can Country in Traer — thank you for being such a great partner to work with and for handling the redemption process. We truly appreciate your continued support of our troop and local Scouting.

Community partnerships like these help make Scouting possible, and we’re incredibly grateful for everyone who supports Troop 60. ⚜️

Great afternoon for Troop 60! 🏊‍♂️

Four Scouts completed the Swimming requirements for their Second Class and First Class ranks. Big congratulations to Kasen, who earned his Second Class rank, and to Jonah, who earned his Tenderfoot rank!

They knocked out all their requirements at the brand-new Cedar Falls High School Natatorium, which was an awesome place to swim and practice skills.

Proud of all the effort these Scouts are putting in! 🏊‍♂️

🇺🇸 Honoring a Veteran & Scouter on Veterans Day

Today, on Veterans Day, Troop 60 pauses to honor and remember Claude E. Brown, Sr., a longtime Scoutmaster and dedicated mentor to countless Scouts over the years.

Claude grew up in Laurel, Iowa, and like many young men of his era, he was drafted into military service during the Korean War. Because of that call to serve his country, he was unable to complete the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout. Although he never received the Eagle badge, he lived the Scout Oath and Law every day of his life — both in uniform and in service to others.

Claude devoted many years to Scouting, shaping the lives of young people through leadership, adventure, and example. In recognition of his exceptional commitment, he was awarded the James E. West Fellowship Award, one of the most meaningful honors given to adult volunteers in Scouting.

Claude’s legacy lives on in the Scouts he guided, the leaders he mentored, and the countless lives he touched along the way. We are grateful for his service to our country and to Scouting.

Please join us in honoring Claude this Veterans Day.

Thank you for your service and your leadership, Scoutmaster Brown.

“A Scout is Loyal. A Scout is Brave. A Scout is Reverent.” He truly embodied all three.
