In April, SJLA teamed up with Regen and visited the Schomburg in Harlem to explore two powerful exhibits celebrating 100 years of Black archival history. Through “The 100,” we experienced the legacy of preserving Black stories, movements, and culture, while reflecting on what our own archives might hold. “Guarinex,” a youth interpretation of Arturo Schomburg’s “The Negro Digs Up His Past,” challenged us to think about how young people reclaim history and shape how it is remembered. Prior to the trip, SJLA spent time reading “The Negro Digs Up His Past” and brought in young pictures of ourselves, to begin imagining how people might be remembering us already.

Sharing this experience with Regen reminded us that the work we do today deserves to be documented, protected, and honored. From sweet ice pops on Harlem streets to family style dinner at , we left grounded in the lessons of the past and inspired to preserve our futures!! The future is bright ✨

Summer SJLA is open for enrollment!

This year, Social Justice Leadership Academy is all about being ROOTED and ROUTED. We’re grounding ourselves in the power, lessons, and legacy of 1960s movement work, learning from those who organized, resisted, and reimagined before us. But we’re not staying in the past. As youth organizers, we’re getting rooted in right now, in the urgency, the possibilities, and the realities of this moment. From that foundation, we’re charting new paths forward. Together, we’ll build routes that honor what exists, strengthen what’s working, and mobilize around what’s missing. We’re not here to recreate, we’re here to radically reimagine. Rooted in history. Routed toward the future.

WHAT: SJLA (Social Justice Leadership Academy)
WHERE: 58 N. Front Street, Hudson
WHEN: July 14-Aug 6 | Tues-Fri, 10am-3pm
Free program, ages 12+

Link in bio to learn more and apply ✨

⭐️ A limited number of paid positions are available for teens, ages 15+. Teen staff join one week earlier for training for a total of five weeks. DM us for the application for a paid youth position.

What can we learn from mushrooms about our unique contributions to the world? 🍄‍🟫🌎

Mycelium is the underground network made up of hair-like threads called hyphae. In the right conditions the hyphae gather to form the fruiting body that we call mushrooms.

These fungal networks break down organic debris, transport information and resources to plants and trees throughout the forest, and bring nutrients to the soil!

The daytime crew took some time to engage with mycelium through a Shiitake and Oyster mushroom Inoculation project and talk about what they learned from the wisdom of mushrooms! 🍄

During Spring Break week, the ReGen Teens joined Greenagers for two days of Trail Management Training to support the restoration of the trail at Oakdale Lake in Hudson. We assisted the team in building new retaining walls and spread woodchips to fortify the pathways. The youth learned how to debark wood with drawknives, and use equipment such as timberjacks and griphoists to move logs. On the second day, we spent time with forager and horticulturalist Annabel, to work on the forest restoration project in Oakdale Park identifying and removing invasives for the native tree and shrub understory to thrive. We had a moment at lunch to try garlic mustard pesto that Annabel made with garlic mustard we helped to remove! 🌳🪵👣

We hope you take a beautiful walk moment into Oakdale to enjoy the sweet emergence of spring. We saw a white swan and a family of turtles in the lake while working on trails and feeling this as a reminder and blessing on the restorative work we can do with our hands and in our everyday lives. 🐢🦢🏞️💦🌊

Thank you to the Greenagers Team for having us take part in trail management and supporting our local community spaces and ecology.

It is a joy and a gift to announce two new additions to our core team! After receiving a flood of extremely impressive applicants, we are truly delighted to welcome ⭐️ Vanessa Baehr and Claire Cousin ⭐️ into full-time roles at Kite’s Nest. Vanessa will be stepping into our newly created Operations & Admin Coordinator role, assisting our Operations Director and our broader team to bring our visions to life through daily care and structural support. Claire will be joining us as Director of Youth Power, overseeing our SJLA program and overall youth organizing strategy.

Vanessa and Claire are long-time members of the Hudson community and have even worked at Kite’s Nest in various roles in the past. Fun facts: as a young person, Claire co-founded the SJLA program she’s now returning to lead and Vanessa helped create our community garden! These two know many of our youth and families - *and maybe even you* - extremely well. They are experienced, thoughtful, trusted advocates within our community. We feel a lot of gratitude that they would choose to join us, and so much excitement for what new things become possible as they each bring their unique abilities, relationships, and passions to this work.

Please join us in welcoming Vanessa and Claire!
