Engaged classrooms. Calm hallways. AP scores above the state average. 🙌

That's what Education Commissioner Pedro Martinez found when he visited Uncommon Schools Roxbury Prep this week. He sat in on classes, joined 8th grade Morning Circle for a conversation about perseverance, and heard from student ambassadors about what makes their school special.

He left with ideas he hopes to bring to other schools, especially how Roxbury Prep helps students who start behind grade level catch up and move ahead. Advocacy is built on relationships, and this week Charters SPEAK members built them at the State House! 🏛️

A huge thank you to State Rep. Ken Gordon, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Education, Rep. Andy X. Vargas, Chair of the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, Rep. Margaret Scarsdale for State Representative , State Rep. Chynah Tyler (alum of ⭐ Uncommon Schools Roxbury, State Representative Priscila Sousa for spending time with advocates and answering their questions.

Educators and staff from charter public schools across Massachusetts toured the State House, joined a legislator panel, and visited their own legislators' offices. They made sure the people who represent them heard firsthand about the students and families charter public schools serve. Thank you to every school who took part in the incredible day!

📣 MCAS OUTCOMES: Charter Public Schools Leading the Way to Recovery

Although MA charter public schools serve just 5% of K–12 students, they're making a major impact on academic recovery. We're proud to celebrate 5 member schools named Schools of Recognition by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) — and 7 member schools among those statewide that have closed pandemic-era learning deficits in both ELA and math.

WNBA guard Taina Mair returned to Roxbury Prep last week for a homecoming nine years in the making. 🏀

Students packed the gym and the City of Boston marked the day by officially declaring September 4th "Taina Mair Day."

The first day of school is always a special milestone, and our schools know how to celebrate.
