Today was an unusual day for us here at ADKSN and we wanted to take a moment to thank all the very patient pet parents that were understanding when we had to adjust patient discharge time; causing many of them to have to wait to take their pets home.
It's not unusual for us to find undiagnosed conditions, often during surgery or anesthesia, as many of our patients have not been previously examined by a veterinarian. It is however unusual when we have numerous patients in one day that have significant issues that lead to extended surgery times. Today 1/2 of our patients came to us with undiagnosed preexisting medical conditions, behavioral issues, or known conditions we were willing to accomodate, that required extensive care by our staff beyond what is typical for our day to day. And because of that most of todays surgery times were significantly extended, causing us to run behind.
Although the primary reason for this post is to thank all those understanding owners, fosters, and rescues that were kind and supportive of our staff, even though we were complicating their day in an effort to ensure all of todays patients recovered successfully from surgery and anesthesia. There is however another important message we would like to relay. The vast majority of the patients that had issues today, were older/adult dogs and cats that would not have experienced prolonged surgery times, rougher anestheisia recoveries and likely delayed healing had they been spayed and neutered when they were younger. So please consider spaying and neutering your pets when they are still young and likely to handle anesthesia and surgery so much better.
