The Change of Command ceremony at American Legion Post 141 honored Commander Laura Goldthwait for her remarkable accomplishments, as she was inducted into the Past Commanders group. The post welcomed new Post Commander Dave Harvey and the executive committee for 2026-2027. Meanwhile, the Auxiliary saw President Stacy West hand over the gavel to incoming President Katie Beardsdale, and Squadron Commander Scott Runyon became a part of the Past Squadron Commanders, with the installation of Squadron Commander John Browning. The event was attended by post members, Legion Department Past Commanders, Our State Rep, County Commissioners, and the meal prepared by the American Legion Post 141 Chef and cooks was outstanding. We appreciate the outgoing leadership for their dedication and welcome the incoming leaders with our full support, wishing them a successful year.

Today, we observe the 82nd anniversary of D-day, during which over 29,000 US Forces made the ultimate sacrifice between June 6th and August 30th (Operation Overlord), a significant turning point in the lengthy endeavor to secure victory over N**i control in Europe. At 6PM today, we will observe a moment of silence at Post 141 to reflect on and honor their sacrifice.

The HHS Air Force JROTC Cadets joined forces with JROTC units nationwide to participate in the Bataan Death March event, honoring the thousands of American and Filipino POWs who suffered through the 65-mile relocation. The event, which entails a 14-mile hike to earn the Bataan March Ribbon, seeks to provide Cadets with a deeper understanding of the prisoners' experiences. This year, a significant number of the HHS Cadets raised pledges to support the Howell American Legion Post 141's initiative to place flags on military grave sites.

“GARRYOWEN”
On the front wall of our Legion hangs a portrait of the Battle of Ia Drang, fought in the Ia Drang Valley at Landing Zone X-Ray in Vietnam from November 14-16, 1965. The portrait is signed by LTC Hal Moore, CSM Basil Plumley, Associated Press Reporter Joe Galloway, who is the only American civilian to receive the Bronze Star in Vietnam, and others. All listed have passed away, and we have recently lost another. The Huey helicopter in the portrait is being flown by Maj Bruce Crandall, affectionately known to his men as 'Snakesh!t.' Bruce Perry Crandall (February 17, 1933 – May 31, 2026) was a United States Army officer who received the Medal of Honor for his actions as a pilot during the Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965, in South Vietnam. During the battle, he flew 22 missions in a Bell Huey helicopter into enemy fire to evacuate more than 70 wounded and bring ammunition and supplies to United States forces. His actions in the Battle of Ia Drang were portrayed by actor Greg Kinnear in the Mel Gibson film, We Were Soldiers. By the end of the Vietnam War, he had flown more than 900 combat missions.

MI National Guard Soldiers Capture World Sniper Championship!

Prior to 9/11, the role of National Guard Soldiers and Airmen was often marginalized by their active-duty counterparts. However, post-9/11, the National Guard has transformed from a part-time force, with members serving only on weekends and two weeks in the summer, to a force capable of part-time and full-time military operations, with many Guardsmen serving up to three years active duty on a six-year commitment, including multiple combat or hardship tours. This introduction serves as a tribute to a remarkable accomplishment. History has been made. 🇺🇸🏆 SPC Angerman and SPC Zwiers, from the Michigan Army National Guard's 1-125 Sniper Team, have secured the top spot at the 2026 International Sniper Competition in Ireland, becoming the first Americans to ever achieve this feat. Competing against elite military teams from across Europe and Canada, the team, coached by CPT Halas, excelled in 12 challenging events, earning the following awards: 1st Place Overall, 1st Place International Team, 1st Place Sniper – SPC Angerman, 1st Place Spotter – SPC Zwiers, and the CS John Killen Memorial Top Pistol Award – SPC Zwiers.

Congratulations SPC Angerman, SPC Zwiers, CPT Halas, and the MI National Guard!
