Michigan Audubon conservation manager, Chad Machinski, will present “Chimney Swifts”, on June 2nd for the Hartland Audubon Nature Club. Chimney Swifts are an exceptional aerial bird, nicknamed the “cigar with wings. A migratory bird from South America, with steep population declines. Their arrival is in May and by mid-July their eggs should be hatching and then headed back south in August through September.

Chad is responsible for the management and care for all 20 of Michigan Audubon’s Sanctuaries around the state and bird specific programs such as Chimney Swift and Purple Martin conservation. He will educate us how to protect habitat for Chimney Swifts and identify potential roost sites.

June 2, 2026 will be the final meeting as Hartland Audubon Nature Club. The Hartland Audubon Nature Club will be merging with Huron Valley Audubon to form Livingston Audubon Naturalists. The new club is pending approval by Michigan Audubon. There will be a farewell feast at 6:30 and all are invited, so bring a dish to pass and join us to celebrate 75 years for the club. At 7 pm, after a few announcements, Chad will begin his program.

John Smith, President of Hartland Audubon Nature Club, will share his adventures at Magee Marsh, “the “warbler capital of the world” where about twenty species of warblers and a variety of other birds subsist. John will also acquaint us with Howard Marsh, known for 260 recorded species of waterfowl and shorebirds. At this May 5th meeting, John plans to schedule field trips to these two birding hot spots in Ohio.

Hartland Audubon Nature Club invites you to Shorebird ID 101 with Joe Kwasniewski, Tuesday, April 7, 2026, 7 PM.

Shorebirds can be tricky to identify, and Joe will give us an overview of species commonly encountered in the Great Lakes region. He is an avid birdwatcher and wildlife photographer with over 15 years of experience, fine-tuning field techniques to capture the essence and beauty of wild birds. He has led field trips around the Midwest in search of elusive bird species.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club welcomes Sue Wright to present “China” on March 3, 2026, 7 P.M. Sue, former president of Oakland Audubon is a well-traveled bird enthusiast and photographer. Undoubtedly her presentation will be engaging and informative.
China, a vast land with immense biodiversity is an exceptional destination for birding. It hosts about 1300 species and three of the world’s major flyways for migratory birds. The ring-necked pheasant is Michigan’s best-known bird from China.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club will host Don Burlett presenting “Chile”, December 2, 2025.

Don, president of Oakland Bird Alliance, is a 30-year avid birder who has logged 6000 bird species on seven continents and fifty countries. He often shares ideas about how to bird internationally.
Chile is an exceptional birding destination with spectacular landscapes that stretch from northern Atacama Desert to southern Patagonia and from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. It is home to 528 species of which 322 breed within the country. Among the 12 endemics is the critically endangered Juan Fernandez firecrown. Don will introduce us to some of these beautiful and fascinating species.

Allen Chartier, “Michigan’s hummingbird guy” will present “Colombia & Andean region hummingbirds” at the Hartland Audubon Nature Club, November 11, 2025, 7 PM.

Allen has birded in 28 countries and all 50 U.S. states. He has been a bird ba**er since 1997 and a hummingbird ba**er since 2000 when he began the Great Lakes HummerNet research project.
He is co-editor of "A Birder's Guide to Michigan" published by the ABA and has been a contributing author for various recent projects with National Geographic including "Complete Birds of North America", "Complete Birds of the World", and "Handheld Birds". He was lead editor of the "Second Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas" (online 2011) and "Michigan Breeding Bird Atlas II" (print 2013). In 2018, He authored "Field Guide to Birds of Michigan" published by the ABA. We are honored to have him present at our meeting.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club will gather October 7, 2025 as Gordon Lonie takes us on a brief tour of three iconic locations to learn about western flora, fauna and geology. His presentations are always pictorial, informative and humorous so come and enjoy his impressive photographs and knowledge of three national landmarks, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Wind Cave National Park, and Devils Tower National Monument.

Gordon worked 31 years as a naturalist presenting educational programs and served as director of the Sterling Heights Nature Center for 27 years. He is one of our favorite and entertaining presenters, so you don’t want to miss his program.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club will open the 2025-26 programs, on September 2, 2025, with Laurel Zoet, co-owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Green Oak Township, who will explain what makes finches special, such as social behaviors and adaptability to various environments.
If you have a bird feeder in Michigan, a charm (flock) of house finches and gold finches are frequent visitors. Finches are known for their vibrant colors, seed-based diet and gregarious behavior which makes them intriguing for birdwatchers. In Native American culture, a finch visit indicates happiness and joy. Laurel will help us identify fascinating finches that bring good tidings to our back yards.

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club will conclude the 2024-25 presentations on June 3, 2025, with a farewell potluck at 6:30 PM to celebrate our successful season and increased membership. New programs will begin September 2, 2025.

At 7 PM, John Smith, chair of HANC, will present “Shore Birds of New Jersey’s Cape May”. Cape May, a peninsula hugged by the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, is considered one of the top eco-tourist locations in the country. Its unique location and diverse habitats make a hospitable environment for birds and butterflies. Whatever type of bird or habitat you’re looking for, you’ll find it on Cape May.

Michigan Snakes Alive

The Hartland Audubon Nature Club welcomes Jim McGrath, founder of Nature Discovery, Williamston, to present his most popular program, “Michigan Snakes Alive”.

He will feature some of Michigan’s non-venomous snakes and allow the audience to become familiar with live specimens. This is an ideal program for budding herpetologists of all ages or anyone wishing to overcome ophidiophobia. Fears and misconceptions about snakes will be addressed in addition to information about snake biology and ecology. Individual species' habits and characteristics will follow while viewing live examples. At presentation's end, all attendees are encouraged to handle the snakes.
