September 11, 2001: We Remember
Twenty-five years later, the timeline of September 11, 2001, remains etched into our history. In a few minutes, everything changed. The world stopped.
Behind every ticking second were people. Fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors. Thousands of innocent lives were taken, including 343 members of the FDNY, 37 members of the Port Authority Police Department, 23 members of the NYPD and responders from agencies across the country who answered the call.
We also remember those who traveled toward the danger when everyone else was trying to escape it. Responders from near and far rushed to help those who couldn't help themselves, before the dust even settled.
Among them were members of Howell Township First Aid & Rescue Squad #1 who went to New York to assist during the response and recovery:
Captain at the time Jeff DeMatteo
Former Captain Dave DeMatteo
John McGrath
Mordy Eisenberg
They represented our squad and our community during one of the darkest moments in American history.
Their service is part of our squad's history, but more importantly, it is part of a much larger story of ordinary people who answered an extraordinary call.
Speaking to Captain Jeff DeMatteo 25 Years later his words echo, "The memory remains. I do not call myself a hero. I just remember the heroes who never made it back."
He recalled the site, ground zero, the pile, describing it as surreal and not a soul could believe what they witnessed. However in darkness, the light shines. He recalled the people in the days following, souls from every part of the world. The country united as donations poured in and people near and far cheered for those who challenged the rubble in hope to help another.
We thank the responders.
We remember those who never came home.
We remember those who ran toward the danger.
We remember the families who were forever changed.
And we remember the unity that followed, when Americans stood together and strangers became neighbors.
September 11, 2001.
Never forgotten.
