Arnold’s Adventure
WELCOME TO MICHIGAN, LITTLE MAN
We were contacted by someone at Bottle Babies asking for help with a dog who had just arrived from Texas two days earlier—and apparently decided Michigan wasn’t going to be boring.
Arnold went missing from his foster mother, Kate’s house, on Tuesday. With him having just finished heartworm treatment and being on steroids, we knew we needed to secure him quickly.
He crossed two very busy roads and ended up near the Voss plant on Beech Daly, where he seemed to be staying in the reeds near the railroad tracks. Kathi from our team, met Kate there on Wednesday evening and were going to set up a feeding station. They both got eyes on him, but it quickly became clear Arnold wasn’t interested in making this easy. An off-leash attempt didn’t go far, so a trap was going to be necessary.
Kim came out and set the trap, and Arnold actually showed up. Unfortunately, the door shut before he fully entered. He lingered nearby until Kim returned to reset it—then decided that was enough interaction for one day and disappeared.
While resetting the trap, they heard a pack of coyotes not too far away, which definitely raised the stress level. Kim decided to stay out there all night. Around midnight, with no sign of Arnold, she took a drive—and unbelievably spotted him sitting right in the middle of the railroad tracks across the street from the plant… on the same side where the coyotes had been heard! Because of course he was!
Kim grabbed food to try to lure him back, but by the time she returned, he had vanished again.
Bob from Aerial Recon came out Thursday and droned the area, but had no luck. At that point, we were starting to worry he may have headed toward the coyotes. Nikki Sheldon helped set another trap in the subdivision behind the Voss plant, where he had been seen earlier.
That trap caught plenty of activity—just not Arnold. The raccoons, however, were very appreciative!
On Friday, we finally got a break. Arnold was spotted again in the subdivision behind the Voss plant, close to Telegraph. We we're so relieved that he was still alive! Bob came back out, but once again, there were no sightings. It was like Arnold had mastered the art of disappearing.
By Saturday, we were ready to pull the trap from the Voss plant, thinking he had moved on.
But at 5:06 a.m., Arnold decided food was more important than adventure. He walked into the trap and was finally secured.
Kate reports that he’s doing great—settling in well with her other dogs and turning into quite the little cutie.
Welcome to Michigan Arnold, but no more sightseeing allowed.
