"Take a Rest" (Matt. 11:28)
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest"
Do you remember your mom telling you to "Take a Rest?" Well Jesus tells us to do just that in our verse today. But what is this rest? How do we achieve it? And where do we find it?
What's your picture of perfect rest? Maybe, a hammock by the beach? A quiet cabin in the woods? A day away from the kids, emails, and phones? Church, the rest Jesus speaks of is much deeper than that! It is rest for the soul (Jeremiah 6:16) It is not the absence of resistance but rest in the resistance. It is not the removal of our problems but peace in our problems! It's not days without stress but serenity in the stress. It's like a turbulent sea whose waves are raging on top but is perfectly still 100 feet below.
This is True Rest! Let me ask you; 'Do you have this?' Jesus says come to me and "Take a Rest" Did you catch that? Rest is not found in a pill, but a person. Rest is not found in a bottle, but in One who sticks closer than a brother. Rest is not about the removal of my problems, but me dwelling in His presence. (Ps.46:4) This Rest is not found in a place, this rest is found in a Person- JESUS CHRIST!
Take a Rest Friend! But what does that mean? To find out we need to look at the word Jesus uses in the original language.
The Greek word for “rest” is ἀναπαύω (anapausis) [notice the word pause in there!] it’s not just taking a nap or zoning out. It means a deep pause, a soul-level exhale. (PS.46:10)
In other words Rest is not about having everything figured out in your life; but having a Father who sees you, knows you, and loves you. Jesus is not asking you to move mountains friends, He's simply asking you to be present where He placed you and to TRUST Him.
This Rest Jesus offers -
It’s not escape. It’s surrender.
It’s not laziness. It’s trust.
Jesus isn’t saying, “Come to me once you’ve figured it all out.”
He’s saying, “Come to me with your burnout, your control issues, your clenched fists.”
Let go of what you were never meant to carry.
Receive the rest only Christ can give.
Stillness isn’t weakness. It’s what happens when we finally believe we’re held. So, won't you "Take a Rest?"
