Prologue

Beaumont Medium Security prison, 2003. I had been meditating in my Bible having my usual devotional. “Carlisle!!” There it was again. The guard yelled my name not once but twice. My cellmate shook his head and those dreadlocks parted enough to reveal that patented Florida style full grill. “That's you big dog!” he said. I smirked and rolled to the edge of t

he cold metal edge. I had grown accustomed to not receiving any mail and for my name to be called twice was like a weird omen. After gathering my letters I was surprised to see that aunts from both sides of my parents had written me having not heard from them in several or anyone else for almost two years. Besides the fact that I know they had not seen or talked to one another since my birth. It was basically the usual family to inmate correspondence. “Change your life, give it to God, keep your head up”....the usual. At that point I had already changed my life though. Having determined to at least finish strong in faith in one of the deadliest prisons in Texas, my heart was set on understanding God's purpose for my life. Even if that meant merely the task of reconciliation and consolation of other prisoners through my new found state of peace in Christ. I knew there was a chance that I might not make it out this time, but I had learned that whatever the outcome was, I win!

Look at the guy on the left. He’s got the lock, but he seems totally comfortable, maybe even complacent. He doesn’t care to change his situation. Then there’s the one in the middle, still locked but clearly frustrated. He knows something’s off, but he hasn’t figured out how to break free yet. He represents that moment in life where we know we need a shift but just can't seem to get there. Lastly, the third person has the key — knowledge. He’s opened his mind and is learning, growing, and changing. The book in his hands isn’t just a literal symbol of learning, it’s the pathway to unlocking potential.

This image reminds me of how easily we can fall into mental traps. Sometimes we’re too comfortable with our routines to seek growth, and other times we’re just stuck in frustration, not knowing how to break free. But the power to change is within us. We all have the potential to open our minds — to learn, to explore, to grow.

It’s not about being the smartest person in the room, it’s about being willing to learn. Growth doesn’t come from staying locked in the same mindset. It comes from curiosity, from questioning your own beliefs, and from opening your mind to new perspectives. So, if you ever feel like the guy with the lock on his head, remember: the key is right in front of you, and it's never too late to use it.
