First Gay Pride Parade on Westheimer, Houston (1979)
The first Gay Pride Parade in Houston took along Westheimer Road. Floats, banners, and marchers filled the street, marking a turning point for the city’s LGBTQ community. The parade drew support from allies as well as participants, creating a bold statement of visibility. In a time when acceptance was still limited, the event carried both celebration and courage. Spectators lined the sidewalks, some cheering while others watched quietly. The parade demonstrated that Houston’s culture was broadening and that diverse voices were beginning to claim public space. For participants, it was an affirmation of identity and community. That first march laid the foundation for what would become an annual tradition. It remains remembered as a landmark moment in the city’s social history.
