Our Story
On May 11, 2017, 4 Houston City Council (HCC) sisters (Kathye Allen, Donna Bridgeman, Sharon Johnson and Alice White) met for dinner, and in the course of their fun conversation about every topic imaginable, as sisters are known to do, the dream of Houston City Council hosting the 2020 Texas State Convention was born. A short skit was presented at the June 2017 HCC meeting and the convention was subsequently approved by our membership including the Convention Board members (Sharon Johnson, Chair, Debbie Schultz Co-Chair, Donna Bridgeman Treasurer/Registrar, Kathye Allen, Convention Marketing/Co-Registrar and Debbie McFarland Secretary). So, it was then full steam ahead to plan “A Time for all Seasons and Sisters” convention that our Beta Sigma Phi sisters would enjoy and remember forever. Our vision was to provide our sisters with the unique activities, sights, sounds, food and fun of a different season being showcased at each event with lots and lots of surprises to thrill them. So, the Spring Fling, Star Spangled Summer, Autumn Splendor and Winter Wonderland Events were born. There being no Texas State Convention planned before ours, we prepared a hilarious skit to present to our sisters at the East Texas Area Convention in October 2017 and an email and social media campaign to get the word out. Pinky Stromek, Nancy Sieh, Dolores Fritz, Kathye Allen, Alice White and Patricia Woods (pictured in our timeline above) traveled to Ft. Worth and performed the skit fabulously to the roaring laughter of the attendees. A video of that skit is posted on this Facebook site. We are so grateful to our sisters at the 2017 East Texas Area Convention, Wendi Sutton their Chairman, and the Mid-Cities City Council for their support and donation of start-up money. We could only borrow funds from HCC, as none had been earmarked from previous conventions to use in the future. So, our fundraising efforts began with a successful “Popcorn” sale. Our first flyer, “Save the Date” (June 26, 27, and 28, 2020) was emailed to all Texas sisters and others requesting information in June 2019. At the HCC Summer Social and Fall Fashion show our sisters generously donated funds to help with our expenses.
In late August 2019, Registration Forms, Other Convention Forms and Hotel Information were emailed to all Texas sisters and other interested sisters for whom we had valid email addresses.
Committee chairs and co-chairs met twice with the Convention Board an it was full steam ahead with all the committees. Registrations continued to be received, and we almost reached out attendance limit of 200 before, what will surely become infamous, the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic struck with a fury and words like self-quarantine became household words. But Houston gals are Texas strong and weren’t going to waste a minute getting the June convention rescheduled. The Embassy Suites Hotel was wonderful to work with and helped us reschedule to October 23-25, 2020 at no additional cost. They even moved all the hotel reservations in our Convention Block automatically. This meant our registered sisters didn’t have to do a thing but add the new date to their calendars and start getting excited to see everyone in October.
