Our last Hispanic Heritage Month spotlight for this year goes to a local changemaker:

Dr. Ruth Gonzalez in 1986 became the first Hispanic woman to earn a doctorate in Mathematics, and it was from Houston’s own Rice University. She went on to work for Exxon and volunteer as an adult literacy tutor at Rice.

We’re continuing Hispanic Heritage Month spotlights with a pivotal figure in the world of U.S. education:

Sylvia Méndez is an American civil rights activist and retired nurse. At age eight, she played an instrumental role in the Mendez v. Westminster case, the landmark desegregation case of 1946. The case successfully ended de jure segregation in California. In 2011 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Our Assistance League Reads group (including: Vicki, Debbi, Carlos Ortiz-Director, Georgana, Josie, Aida, Alicia, Barbara, Ana Padron CIS) read to the pre-school children at The Tiger Trail School last week and everyone had a wonderful time!!

This month we are thankful for the 20 years of service from Anne Nemer. Anne originally joined the Assistance League of the Bay Area and as she moved she naturally joined our chapter. She has served on the Board and helped with several committees such as Operation School Bell and Books & Brunch. She finds it very rewarding knowing she has made a difference in childrens lives as well as all the friends she has made. Thank you Anne for your efforts and friendship!

We’re kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrating a pioneer in the medical field:

Dr. Helen Rodríguez Trías was an American pediatrician, educator and women's rights activist. She was the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association (APHA), a founding member of the Women's Caucus of the APHA, and a recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal. She is credited with helping to expand the range of public health services for women and children in minority and low-income populations around the world.
