Good morning, families!

We are excited to announce that we’re ready to charter Venturing Crew 1965 at St. Thomas! This will become the fourth Scouting America unit at our church. And if you’re not totally sure what Venturing is — you’re in good company. 🙂

Venturing is a co-ed, high-adventure program for young men and women ages 14–20.

This Crew will truly be what the youth make it. It’s designed to be youth-led — from uniform choices (yes, you can get creative beyond the standard green shirt), to meeting schedule (we’re thinking once monthly), to fundraising ideas, and most importantly, the adventures themselves.

The Crew is not meant to replace your troop if you're in one — it’s meant to supplement it. Unless specifically excluded (but subject to the usual prohibition of "double dipping"), camping nights and activities completed with the Crew can count toward advancement, merit badges, and OA eligibility in your primary troop.

We would especially love to see some of our recent Eagle Scouts join to provide leadership and mentorship.

We’ll also need adults willing to help guide and advise as we build this new unit. If you’re interested in helping shape something exciting from the ground up, we’d love your involvement.

Let’s make Crew 1965 happen!

Please contact Zac directly ([email protected]) if you'd like to participate.

Crew 1965 is prepping for launch early 2026. If you're unfamiliar with Venturing, here's the breakdown:

Venturing is Scouting America’s high-adventure, co-ed program for teens who want big experiences, real leadership, and zero kiddie vibes.

What it is:
A youth-led program built around adventure, service, leadership, and personal growth. Think: the “older-kid” branch of Scouting where you actually get to plan the fun instead of being told what to do.

Who it’s for:
Young men and women ages 14–20 (or 13 and finished 8th grade). Perfect for teens who’ve outgrown the troop scene or never did Scouts but want the action and freedom.

What they do:
Whatever the crew dreams up—

Backpacking, climbing, sailing, scuba, shooting sports

Conservation or community service projects

Road trips, overnights, lock-ins

Leadership development and real project planning

High-adventure bases (Philmont, Sea Base, Northern Tier, etc.)

Crews choose a specialty or mix it up: outdoor adventure, sports, arts, religious life, STEM—anything the youth want.

Who runs it:
The youth. Period.
Adults (advisors and committee members) support, keep things safe, and handle logistics. But crews rise or fall on the strength of the youth officers—president, vice presidents, etc.

The vibe:
More freedom. More responsibility. More challenge. Less “stand in line and learn knots.” It’s where older teens go to push themselves, lead real teams, and have ridiculous amounts of fun doing things most people only talk about.
